The Mali Country Office operates in a complex environment shaped by insecurity, inter-communal conflict, socio-political instability, climate shocks, and lingering effects of COVID-19—impacting over 12.9 million people. Despite these challenges, the office remains committed to promoting child rights and well-being through effective programs and strong partnerships. 

Governance is semi-presidential with ongoing decentralization efforts, though implementation is uneven. Gender disparities persist, especially affecting women and girls. However, recent infrastructure reforms and renewed climate action offer potential for sustainable development and poverty reduction. The office continues to deliver impactful results across sectors. 

UNICEF Mali has 6 zonal offices and a central office that ensure regular implementation and monitoring of the cooperation program. Through its offices, UNICEF ensures proximity to populations in need and fosters accountability to these populations. 

How can you make a difference?  

The Nutrition Specialist supports the development and preparation of the nutrition programme and is responsible for managing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting the programme progress of a sector of the nutrition programme within the country programme. The Nutrition Specialist provides technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of concrete and sustainable results in maternal, infant and child nutrition programmes/projects. This is carried out according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology (RBM), as well as UNICEF’s Strategic Plans, standards of performance, and accountability framework.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Minimum requirements: 

  • Education : An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: nutrition, public health, nutritional epidemiology, global/international health and nutrition, health/nutrition research, policy and/or management, health sciences, nutritional epidemiology, or another health-related science field. 

  • Work Experience: At least 5 years of relevant work experience in a developing country in one or more of the following areas is required: nutrition, public health, nutrition planning and management, or maternal, infant and child health/nutrition care. 

  • Language Requirements: Fluency in French and a good working knowledge of English are required. Knowledge of another official UN language or a local language is considered an asset. 

Desirables: 

  • Experience in health/nutrition programme/project development and management in a UN system agency or organization is an asset 

  • Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts.

This position has been assessed as an elevated risk role for Child Safeguarding purposes as it is either a role with direct contact with children, a role that works directly with identifiable children’s data, a safeguarding response role, or an assessed risk role. UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance.  Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station is required for IP positions and will be facilitated by UNICEF. Should you be selected for a position with UNICEF, you either must be inoculated as required or receive a medical exemption from the relevant department of the UN. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.
