UNICEF Innocenti undertakes and commissions research on emerging or current issues of relevance for children and child rights. The office links research and global trends analysis to influence policies, programming, and advocacy, as well as innovations, and to drive future strategies and vision of the organization and the child rights agenda more broadly amongst governments, private sector, and other institutions.

  • UNICEF Innocenti uses foresight to set the agenda for children uncovering emerging trends and deepening understanding of key issues facing girls and boys and serving as a go-to office for advising UNICEF and a diversity of actors, including governments, the United Nations, private sector, civil society and children and young people themselves in the face of the continually changing global economy, political and security environment.

UNICEF Innocenti has a dedicated research team focused on producing high-quality evidence to inform and improve education programmes, policies and systems. Since 2018, the team has been leading and supporting education research in over 40 countries around the world. As part of the research portfolio for UNICEF Innocenti, there is a strong focus on foundational learning, early childhood education, and inclusive education.

The Research Specialist (Education) will coordinate research activities under ongoing projects such as Data Must Speak (DMS), Women in Learning Leadership (WiLL), and Teachers for All, while also contributing to the design and development of new initiatives. The role includes conducting research using mixed methods, with a strong emphasis on quantitative approaches to generate nuanced insights into education systems, policies, practices, and outcomes.

The incumbent will provide guidance to UNICEF Country Offices undertaking education research, ensuring coherence with UNICEF’s global priorities and those of UNICEF Innocenti. In close collaboration with partners, the Research Specialist will work to strengthen evidence generation, foster innovation, and enhance the influence of applied research on education policy and practice.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: Master or equivalent (Advanced University Degree) in Education, Economics (Soc. Sci),Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Data Science and any other related fields.
  • Work Experience: At least 5 years of relevant work experience in Education, Development, Research, Quantitative Analysis, Research Specialist, Evidence Generation, Policy dialogue, Project Management and any other related fields.
  • Skills: 
    •    Ability to design, conduct, and analyze studies to support new education research development initiatives.
    •    Proficiency in applying advanced quantitative data science methods and tools, such as, R, Python and/or Stata.
    •    Ability to plan, organize, and manage research projects, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards. 
  • Language Requirements: Fluency in English and proficient level in French is required. 

Desirables:

  • Language: Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish) or a local language.
  • Experience with geospatial data analysis (e.g., GIS) and version control platforms such as GitHub is a strong asset.
  • Proven record of producing and disseminating high-quality research outputs, policy briefs, and publications. 
  • Ability to build strategic partnerships with academic institutions, research networks, and development actors.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working in the UN or other international development organizations as international professional.
  • Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts.
