UNICEF's Office of Innovation creates opportunities for the world's children by focusing on where new markets can meet their vital needs. We do this by:

About the UNICEF Venture Fund, Funds and Financing

Established in 2015, the UNICEF Venture Fund has been specifically designed to finance early stage, open-source technology that can benefit children. The core motivation of the Venture Fund is to identify "clusters" or portfolios of initiatives around emerging technology - so that UNICEF can both shape markets and also learn about and guide these technologies to benefit children. We invest in solutions that can impact the lives of the most vulnerable children.

We find these solutions clustered around $100 billion industries in frontier technology spaces, such as: UAVs, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, nano-satellites, and human dynamics. The Venture Fund is scaling its investment portfolio with the aim of investing in 20 start-ups every year and provides funding to CO-led projects. The current portfolio of companies consists of several cohorts developing and piloting solutions in virtual and augmented reality, data science and artificial intelligence, blockchain, UAVs, IoT, and in assistive technology.  

How can you make a difference?

The Innovation Specialist (Portfolio Performance and Learning) will lead efforts to create, coordinate and compile knowledge products for the Venture Fund team, in close collaboration across the Solutions team. The goal is to capture results and learnings from frontier tech investments for the Fund for internal and external audiences. In addition, the Innovation Specialist will work on strengthening knowledge sharing within Office of Innovation, and package advocacy materials for external engagement. 

Key functions, accountabilities, and related duties/tasks

  • Lead the review and implementation of the Fund’s data and metrics framework, ensuring systematic capture of portfolio results  
  • Generate and synthesize learnings from the Venture Fund portfolio, and liaise with the MEL team to integrate relevant insights into OOI’s knowledge agenda 
  • Drive Venture Fund Alumni Relations and Portfolio Management  
  • Lead Venture Fund-related reporting, including the Annual Report, and serve as focal point for Venture Fund communications

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in a relevant field (Eg. International Development; social sciences, engineering, law, international relations, business administration).
  • Work Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional work experience in a relevant field including:
    • Demonstrated management-level experience in knowledge management and generating real-time data dashboards for frontier technology solutions and in UNICEF programme regions.
    • Demonstrated experience in collecting and managing data and information from various sources for portfolio and performance management and to inform investment strategy.
  • Skills:
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including external representation and presentations, facilitation of networks of communities.
    • Ability to synthesize technical information and translate it into accessible products and systems.
  • Language Requirements: Knowledge of English language at Proficient/Fluent level is required.

Desirables:

  • Language: Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language.
  • Understanding of open source and frontier technologies, and their applications to UNICEF strategic priorities.
  • A strong understanding of UNICEF programmes, goals and principles, and experience in a UNICEF programme country.
  • Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts.
