Job Description:

The Department of Medicine, Division of Institute for Therapeutic Innovations is seeking a full time Medical Scientist II. With immediate supervision from the Principal Investigator or their designee, the Medical Scientist II will use technical problem solving skills to perform standardized or repetitive test in the BSL2 and BSL3 microbiology laboratory of the Institute for Therapeutic Innovation in Orlando, FL.  This position will be responsible for conducting novel experiments using Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic principles to develop antimicrobial drug regimens that optimize the treatment of infections due to tuberculosis, multidrug-resistant bacteria that cause signification morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients, and other microbes.

The employee will follow all federal, state and local regulations pertaining to assigned laboratory and animal facilities and will be registered with the USDA and US Dept. HHS for access to high consequence biological agents. Work practices will follow strict biosafety and biosecurity protocols. The individual must obtain and maintain all required security and suitability clearances. Offer contingent on a successful pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education.

Essential Functions;

1. Perform laboratory tests/experiments in the BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories following established procedures or protocols without deviations unless approved by laboratory manager or supervisor. Conduct studies using Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and generate standard operating procedures and reports that meet these standards.
2. Perform data analysis and present experimental data clearly and concisely to the project manager and supervisors at any time, including weekly laboratory meetings.
3. Prepare sterile solutions for use in microbial assays. Prepare solutions and reagents following standard laboratory procedures.
4. Prepare, clean, and sterilize glassware and instruments. Solve laboratory equipment and experimentation set up problems.
5. Maintain a detailed notebook clearly describing the studies and results.
6. Assist in design and preparation of all models, both animal and hollow fiber.
7. Monitor inventory levels and count/record orders upon receipt.
8. Assist with literature searches and adapt new methods to meet the experimental needs of the laboratory.
9. Assist with creating graphs for presentation and publication.
10. Instruct technicians and visitors on experimental methods that are used in the laboratory and monitor the quality of data generated by others.
11. Modify protocols with PI’s approval.
12. Develop novel experiments related to Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamics.  Research, develop, and implement new laboratory procedures and independently take on new projects with minimal guidance. Assist with literature searches and adapt new methods to meet the experimental needs of the laboratory. 

Expected Salary:

$46,000 - $51,000 Annually

Required Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology or a closely related field; or a master’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience.

Preferred:

Active Security Risk Assessment and clearance the Federal Select Agent Program to access select agents.
At least 2 years of experience working in a BSL3 Laboratory
At least 2 years of experience with working with mice.
At least 2 year of experience in microbiological drug assays.
Experience in working with Hollow Fiber Bioreactors.
Experience in working with Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Experience in working with BSL3 agents

Must be able to independently conduct all functions with high quality experimental outputs and limited supervision.

Organizational skills and ability to pay close attention to details is essential.

Experience working with vertebrate animals in a laboratory research setting.
