Incumbent will work closely with PI and laboratory to personnel to offer administrative and scientific support for research centered on exploring the role of perineuronal nets, extracellular matrix, and other glycoproteins in the brain across the lifespan. Knowledge of IACUC, EH&S and UF purchasing procedures represent a significant and integral part of our research needs. Basic knowledge of brain tissue handling, mass spectrometry, molecular biology and transgenic colony maintenance is also critical. Successful applicant will have expertise in these research areas.
Research coordination and laboratory maintenance: Responsibilities include: 1) Working with the Alonge lab to oversee IACUC inspection preparations and compliance regarding surgical procedures, 2) maintaining surgical and electrophysiology equipment, 3) monitoring all surgical procedure and related drug (DEA) logs, 4) communicating any concerns/issues with PIs as necessary, 5) ensuring EH&S, IACUC, DEA compliance requirements are met by providing oversight and training, ordering supplies, inventory, radiation surveys, supervising compliance with hazardous waste and biological safety requirements, routine record keeping, maintaining stock solutions including cell culture media and common buffers, 6) expense and finance via invoices/consolidation of payment for all supplies/travel using Concur, 7) maintain laboratory website utilizing WordPress to makes trainee, alumnus, research and publication updates.
Conducting experiments: Duties include 1) designing and implementing new molecular protocols, 2) monitoring rodent feeding schedule and performing body condition scoring throughout experimental testing, 3) performing drug injections and infusions required for testing, 4) conducting rodent behavioral training and testing sessions, 5) collecting electrophysiological data, 6) performing analyses of gene expression, 7) mass spectrometry sample processing, 8) interpreting/providing data to PI and analyzing data per PI instruction, and 9) gene cloning.
Animal husbandry: Duties include 1) handling and maintaining inventory of transgenic animal colonies, 2) Initiating transfers from breeding core and among other PIs using this resource. And Performing rodent survival surgeries and associated postoperative tasks: Assists with surgeries for the Alonge lab. Survival surgeries to include implantations, cannulations, and AAV administration procedures. Postoperative care duties include daily animal health checks/monitoring, administration of necessary pharmaceuticals (e.g., analgesics), and consultation with vet staff as needed. Primary surgeon is also responsible for completing surgical logs and later archiving those surgical records.
