Job Description:

The Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Florida is seeking qualified applicants for a Data Scientist III position to work as a Senior Demographer with BEBR’s Population Program Director and staff to support BEBR’s annual contract with the Florida Legislature and other demographic analysis projects.

BEBR has a long history of producing population and household estimates and projections for Florida, with annual data releases going back to the early 1970s, and for conducting applied demographic research. We are seeking an experienced demographer who can independently develop state and county population projections for Florida; state and county population estimates and projections of the demographic characteristics age, sex, race, and ethnicity; and state and county household estimates and projections. The successful applicant will also conduct research and prepare analyses of emerging demographic trends and collaborate with program staff on other demographic and GIS research projects, contracts, and grants.

The position requires expert knowledge of demographic estimation and projection techniques (e.g., cohort-component, Hamilton-Perry, and headship rate models), and advanced technical expertise in statistical software programming (SAS, R, or Python) and data analytics and visualization (Excel), including automation features such as scripting and macros. A focus on accuracy and attention to detail, the proficiency to develop innovative statistical programming solutions to address data quality issues, and an ability to manage multiple deadlines independently, are essential competencies for the position. The successful applicant will interact with federal, state, and local government officials, businesses, the media, and members of the public to provide information and guidance on demographic topics and serve as a Florida representative to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Federal-State Cooperative Programs for Population Projections (FSCPP); excellent communication skills are a must.

To be considered for the position, a statement that details your past experience producing population and household estimates and projections, is required. Include a summary of the methodology used and attach copies of the estimates and projections or provide links to the published data products. You must possess the skills to independently produce population estimates and projections by demographic characteristics, as well as household estimates and projections, with minimal supervision.
