| Job Description: |
Reporting to the EDP manager. A key member of the EDP team, the assistant editor assists with the transformation of a book manuscript into a printed and bound volume, overseeing the text corrections for reprint and new-to-paperback editions approximately 70 frontlist titles and 50 to 70 reprint or new-to-paper titles annually, maintaining the high standards of UPF books.
Coordinates Editorial Projects
- Serves as the primary project coordinator, sheparding assigned titles through all stages of the publication process.
- Edits manuscripts (or oversees freelancers) to ensure proper organization, consistency of style and presentation, grammatical correctness and factual and typographical accuracy.
- Monitors the work of freelance editors, proofreaders, and indexers to ensure schedules and quality standards are met.
Coordinate Author and Interdepartmental Communication
- Confers with authors before, during, and after the book-making process, serving as the the main point of contact with the author in matters of perfecting the manuscript and of communicating with other departments at the Press.
- Consults with the book designer, EDP manager, and marketing staff concerning design, production, and marketing decisions in which editorial considerations are pertinent.
Prepares Manuscripts
- Prepares manuscripts for freelance copy editors, applying SAI styles or typesetting coding and ensuring that all components are complete and properly organized.
Trains interns
- Trains editorial interns in basic editorial practices, workflows, and tools, and reviews intern work to provide feedback.

$17.24 /hr ($36,000 annually)

| Required Qualifications: |
Skills include familiarity with word processing and desktop publishing technology, specifically Adobe Creative Suite.

| Preferred: |
Formal education should include at least a bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of book publishing experience. Appropriate college coursework may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Strong organizational skills and self-direction necessary. Skills include experience with publishing technology including XML and Scribe Well-Formed Document Workflow (WFDW), ebook conversion technology, accessibility standards, and spreadsheet systems.
