| Job Description: |
– Maintenance of instruments, inventory, and laboratory space for VEM 5402L Introduction to Veterinary surgery and VEM Advanced Small Animal Surgery laboratory: • Maintenance of general surgical instruments, surgical lamps, and general anesthesia machines. • Coordinate and establish work priorities for course including collation and circulation of course notes. • Assignment of student laboratory groups. • Management of disposables inventory • Networking along with Teaching Laboratory Specialist with local shelters/rescue groups to secure spays and neuters for student laboratories • Maintain an efficient workflow during laboratories. • Works with Supervisor to maintain working current IACUC protocols for animal use within the laboratories. • Purchase surgical supplies and coordinates the operating budget for the didactic surgical laboratory practicums of the Department. • Manages disposal of trash and biohazardous waste, runs laundry services for lab space. •Movement of oxygen cylinders in the oxygen supply room to maintain oxygen supply to student teaching laboratory (moved from bottom) •Maintain the student laboratory by mopping and vacuuming the area (moved from bottom)
– Tissue Procurement and Maintenance •Procurement of cadavers to support both laboratory courses and research needs for members of SACS. •Removal from the truck and placement in the cooler and freezers. •Work with Teaching Laboratory Specialist to organize and keep inventory in these locations. •Lifting and restraining animals used in the course and in research. •Communication with Syndaver company for purchase orders for VEM 5402L, VEM 5433. •Maintenance of Syndaver tissue for VEM 5402L, VEM 5433, and LA Ophthalmology (all 3 Equine heads).
- Assist faculty members in the SACS Department in the conduct of research projects in areas relating to basic surgical physiology and biology and to applied surgical therapeutics. A breakdown of such activity includes: • Performing clinical pathological tests. • Physically maintain IACUC records and treatment programs for all animals on experimental protocol. • Assisting in animal handling surgical preparation, intraoperative sterile assisting, and postoperative care of patients in serious or critical condition.
- Maintain records of didactic/laboratory and experimental research protocols.
- Provide imaging services, preparation of course and manuscript materials for Department faculty to include literature searches.

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and three years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.

· Experience in veterinary surgery settings, especially in anesthesia · Proficiency with Microsoft, Adobe, and UF’s E-Learning Website - Canvas · Experience with lab animals, IACUC, and EH&S Protocols · Willingness to work with/around animal cadavers · Ability to work independently and as part of a team · Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate effectively
