The Director of Professional and Workforce Development provides strategic leadership for key initiatives within the University of Florida’s Office of Professional and Workforce Development (OPWD) in the Office of Teaching and Technology. Reporting to the Senior Director and Assistant Provost, this position oversees the strategy, operations, and growth of the TREEO Center, conferences, and a portfolio of online and customized professional development programs. The Director is responsible for guiding program operations, personnel, facilities, and fiscal resources while leading business development, partnerships, marketing efforts, and new program initiatives aligned with workforce and industry needs. This role plays an important part in expanding the University of Florida’s impact through high-quality professional education and workforce training.
Reporting to the Sr. Director and Assistant Provost, supporting the overall management and administrative direction for the Office of Professional and Workforce Development (OPWD) within the Office of Teaching & Technology. The role plays a key part in advancing the university’s workforce development mission by providing strategic oversight for the Training, Research and Education for Environmental Occupations (TREEO) Center, Conferences, and Professional Development initiatives.
The position is responsible for guiding the strategic direction, operations, facilities, personnel, and fiscal management associated with these programs, including both online and customized in-person training offerings. Responsibilities include establishing and implementing operational policies, overseeing daily program operations, coordinating the effective use of facilities and resources, and supporting staff and program development. In partnership with university leadership and external stakeholders, this role also helps identify emerging workforce needs and opportunities where the University of Florida can expand its impact through high-quality professional education and workforce training.
Strategic Management and Operations
• Identify and implement new program offerings based on market conditions, workforce trends/demands, and State of Florida initiatives. • Serves as the leader of the OPWD’s leadership team, establishing performance goals and measures to evaluate the success of assigned areas of responsibility. • Directs the activities related to the daily operations of the Office of Professional and Workforce Development. Responsible for the direction of multiple administrative functions, including finance, human resources, facility operations, property control, purchasing, and security. • Collaborates with the Teaching and Technology Director of Support Services in developing operating budgets for Office of Professional and Workforce Development (OPWD) units, as well as providing insight and oversight of OPWD fiscal policies and procedures. Identify and pursue relevant grant and government funding opportunities that support workforce development, professional education, and program growth. • Leads the strategic planning for assigned areas and assists the Sr. Director/Assistant Provost in developing and implementing the overall strategic plan. • Develops and implements a collaborative strategy to have the University of Florida’s colleges actively recognize the Office of Professional and Workforce Development as the Central Repository for non-credit activity. • Works with the Sr. Director/Assistant Provost to develop workforce development solutions that support the mission of the University of Florida as well as the goals and objectives of the Board of Governors. • Assists the Sr. Director/Assistant Provost in the analysis of the effectiveness of policies and procedures and establishes future direction for functional policies and programs. Oversees the day-to-day operations of assigned areas, including the supervision of departmental employees. Provides guidance and direction to staff involved in departmental services and programs.
Business Development
• Coordinate business development marketing efforts to include website development, public relations, and branding. Provide oversight to ensure all of the Office of Professional and Workforce Development’s marketing and public relations materials and activities conform to University of Florida rules and standards. • Build and maintain customer relationships to encourage repeat business and long-term relationships. Consistently maintain effective relationships and demonstrate teamwork with customers, Teaching and Technology leadership colleagues, partners, and UF stakeholders. • Write and present effective proposals that articulate customer needs, desired outcomes, and recommended strategies. Collaborate with external and internal customers to draft Letters of Agreement/Memorandums of Understanding for agreed-upon services and programs for the approval of the Sr. Director/Assistant Provost and Associate Provost. • Responsible for ensuring all programs, activities, and series comply with university, state, and federal statutes/regulations.
Facilities and Equipment Management
• Provide oversight for the use of facility space in order to maximize usage and reduce expenses. • Develop a phased replacement plan for technology to include, but not be limited to, computers, monitors, cameras, LCDs, and software, coordinating with the Teaching and Technology Asset Management Coordinator within the Office of Personnel and Financial Services to ensure the Office of Professional and Workforce Development is compliant with UF policies and procedures for using technology. • Coordinate with appropriate core offices to ensure the Office of Professional and Workforce Development is compliant in all applicable areas.
