Job Description:

This position is responsible for managing genetic counseling interactions during medical clinics held either in Gainesville or in the outlying areas.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Managing genetic counseling interactions during medical clinics held either in Gainesville or regional clinics. Position may require on-call responsibilities, overnight travel outside the Gainesville area, and provision of telemedicine services. The genetic counselor will meet with families in clinic, via telemedicine, or in the hospital and gather information about genetic risk factors. Genetic counselor will interpret such information in communication with a physician geneticist and will provide follow-up documentation of genetic counseling recommendations. The genetic counselor may provide independent genetic counseling, including results disclosures, after communication with a physician.
  • On call coverage and oversight of the Florida Expanded Newborn Screening (NBS) Program in conjunction with Geneticists and Nutritionists for metabolic, genetic, and cystic fibrosis screens. Responsible for contacting families and their physicians with abnormal NBS results, arranging for diagnostic studies, and providing genetic counseling. Taking first call during clinic working hours if inpatient consultations. Interacting with residents, physicians of all specialties, patients, caregivers of patients, clinical and hospital staff in relation to inpatient consultation services.
  • Take first call during work hours for inpatient consultations for up to 17 weeks per year. Interactions with attending physicians, patients, parents, residents, medical students, and other medical personnel in relationship to inpatient consultations.
  • Administrative and other duties as assigned by the Genetic Physicians, extenders, and or senior Genetic Counselor.
  • Working with divisional staff to coordinate appointments, referrals and collection of appropriate records. Will oversee the overall activities of the clinical genetics program as it relates to the provision of genetic counseling. The genetic counselor will be responsible for working with patients, lab companies, and insurance companies to obtain prior authorization for outside genetic testing.
  • Providing educational lectures through the School of Medicine and through Children’s Medical Services, Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, or other organizations as required as part of the Regional Genetics Grant with the state of Florida.
  • Participating in the hiring and training of new genetic counselors, dietitians, and front office staff.
Expected Salary:

$82,000-$88,000

Minimum Requirements:

A master’s degree from a genetic counseling training program or its equivalent as determined by the Accreditation Council of Genetic Counseling or its successor or an equivalent entity; or A doctoral degree from a medical genetics training program accredited by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics or the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in genetic counseling.
Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
