This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Registered students are employed on a part-time basis, up to 20 hours per week.

Job Description:

Smathers libraries are looking for a highly motivated graduate student passionate about working with real world datasets and delivering impactful data visualization projects with Python. The graduate student will be responsible for creating both static and interactive resources for learning data visualization with Python. The student will oversee effectively communicating the trends and patterns in the data through data storytelling to a wider audience. The graduate student will also support teaching and learning by augmenting the resources through the use of predictive analytics.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

The key responsibility for this internship will include  

  • Completing all the required trainings by Smathers Libraries 

  • Tidying and curating datasets from EuroStat, V-Dem and ESS databases 

  • Design a static website resource for learning data visualization in Python using these datasets. 

  • Develop an interactive module for learning data visualization in Python. 

  • Present project report and disseminate research to Smathers libraries and wider research community  

Expected Salary:

$22.00 /hr

Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled graduate student in good standing in academic program and should have active enrollment status throughout the duration of the internship  

  • At least 2 years' experience with Python programming and Jupyter notebooks.  

  • Experience working with data visualization libraries (matplotlib, seaborn and plotly)  

  • Knowledge of Shiny for Python or other interactive modules 

  • Knowledge of working with tidy data principles and data wrangling  

  • Experience with Git, GitHub, GitLab or any other version control system 

  • Ability to effectively communicate technical expertise to non-subject matter experts.  

Preferred:
  • Interest in working with both qualitative and quantitative datasets  
  • Working with data warehousing and cloud computing  
  • Knowledge of supervised and unsupervised AI algorithms important for data visualization  
  • Knowledge of predictive analytics and data streamlining strategies.
