Job Description:

Maintain accurate records, work effectively with Master Gardener volunteers. This position will work closely with the Sumter County Master Gardener Volunteers, under direct supervision of the Residential Horticulture Agent/Master Gardener Coordinator and County Extension Director. 20% of time will go towards supporting the Commercial Horticulture and Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Agents.

Program Delivery
Assist Extension Agent in planning, organizing, conducting, and evaluating horticultural education program activities and events for the public and volunteers. Serve in a training role for volunteer leaders by providing them with program ideas and materials. Teach groups of adults and youth utilizing prepared curricula. Prepare marketing and demonstration materials to aid in the presentation of classes (e.g., flyers, print materials, visual aids, or PowerPoint presentations). Prepare and distribute horticulture newsletters, update websites, social media (Facebook, Eventbrite), and other mass media. May be required to drive county vehicles to county, district and state events.

Program Support
Screen volunteers for the Master Gardener Program using appropriate volunteer application and screen process. Assist with planning, coordinating, and implementing volunteer meetings, committee meetings, and on-going training. Assist with planning and preparing lessons and materials and/or schedule speakers. Continue to improve knowledge of subject matter and teaching methods.

Reporting
Maintain volunteer files and assist with data entry to track program participants, hours, and contacts. Maintain clientele and outreach records required for quarterly and end of year reports.

Training
Develop and improve knowledge of horticulture subject matter, becomes more proficient in determining clientele needs, understands various methods of reaching and teaching clientele, and develops proficiency in using horticulture materials via participation in orientation training, continuous on-the-job training, and self-study.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

Received: Verbal and written instructions for training purposes, program delivery, and procedural forms.  Additional instructions on an as-needed basis. Must be able to work independently and in a team.  This position reports to the County Extension Director with daily activities assigned by the Horticulture Agent.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE

Office hours are 8:00 to 5:00 with an hour lunch, M-F. Some evenings and weekends are required.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW. 

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.  For purposes to travel to county, district and state events and other duties assigned. Background check and fingerprinting required.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION

Basic knowledge of horticulture or closely related field. Ability to relate with and teach different audiences

COMMUNICATION

Regularly communicates with internal (CED, other Extension Faculty, Master Gardener Volunteers) and external (clientele, community partners) contacts.

MONETARY RESPONSIBILITY

Assist in collecting registration fees and plant sale money, including credit card transactions and use of cash registers. Responsible for business credit cards.

CREATIVITY, STRATEGY AND LEADERSHIP.

Ability to create various educational and marketing materials preferred. Must assist with coordination of over 90 volunteers.

Expected Salary:

$19.15 per hour

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

Knowledge, skill, and ability to use standard gardening equipment.
Ability to work effectively with people, supervise volunteers and provide leadership.
Ability to manage time and maintain accurate records.
Ability to communicate with others; talking/teaching adults and youth.
Ability to operate a computer and knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
Reliable transportation, proof of insurance, and good driving record.
