Job Description:

The Photographer (Regional – South Florida) serves as a professional photographer, limited videographer, and image archivist for the UF/IFAS Communications strategic digital content team. This role is responsible for producing high-quality visual content that supports teaching, research, Extension, and public engagement initiatives across the state.

Using advanced photography and digital media techniques, the Photographer creates compelling visual stories that highlight UF/IFAS programs, faculty, and impact. This position also contributes to social media outreach and maintains a robust, searchable image archive for organizational use.

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Communications team (UF/IFAS Communications) amplifies the reach of scientific knowledge with words, technology, art, and video to be more accessible to an array of audiences, wherever they are. We focus on building awareness of UF/IFAS experts and expertise. We strive to showcase how UF/IFAS embodies the teaching, research, and service elements of the UF mission in its daily work and direct interaction with key audiences – students, stakeholders, and residents.

Photography & Visual Content Creation

  • Capture high-resolution images for editorial, promotional, and public-facing use across print and digital platforms
  • Plan and execute photo assignments independently or collaboratively
  • Determine composition, lighting, and camera settings to achieve desired visual outcomes
  • Produce occasional high-quality video content to support storytelling efforts
  • Edit RAW images using Adobe Creative Suite and related software
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and communications teams to plan and execute assignments
  • Ensure visual content aligns with UF/IFAS branding and storytelling goals

Image Archive & Asset Management

  • Maintain and organize a large-scale digital archive of images
  • Apply metadata, manage file storage systems, and ensure long-term accessibility
  • Upload and manage image galleries in internal databases
  • Retrieve and distribute visual assets upon request
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and studio organization

Content Coordination & Collaboration

  • Participate in content planning meetings with the strategic digital content team
  • Collaborate with UF/IFAS Communications and University communications partners
  • Identify and recommend visual content opportunities aligned with social and digital trends

Work Environment

  • Frequent travel (approximately 60%) throughout South Florida
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required for events
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments, including heat and humidity

Location

  • This is an off-campus/remote position based in South Florida due to the need for frequent travel throughout South Florida.
  • The preferred candidate's residence will be located in the central portion of South Florida, for example, in Hendry, Collier, Glades, Lee, or other centrally located South Florida county.
Expected Salary:

$22.12 per hour; commensurate with experience and skills

Required Qualifications:

A high school diploma and four years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred:

This position requires professional photojournalism, studio, or public relations photography experience as evidenced by a portfolio of published work in print or online publications. 

Must be very familiar with Adobe Photoshop and other digital imaging technology and software applications.

Must possess technical knowledge of photography and digital camera equipment, specifically, a thorough understanding of how camera lens aperture, camera shutter speeds and ISO settings determine intentional and desired photographic results.

Must be self-motivated with extensive interpersonal skills, who can produce high quality work under deadlines.
