Job Description:

The University of Florida, Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM), seeks a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician with EMS leadership experience to serve as an EMS Medical Director and Clinical Ast/Aso/Full Professor. The ideal candidate will provide medical direction for designated EMS agency partners across Gainesville and the surrounding region, supporting high-quality prehospital care delivery. Focused on advancing prehospital medicine, protocol excellence, and EMS education, you will collaborate with a dedicated team to strengthen emergency medical services across the region.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida-Gainesville is an independent academic department within the College of Medicine. With the substantial infrastructure and resources from the State’s Flagship University dedicated to the missions of research and education, we are committed to training medical students, residents, and fellows to become superior well-rounded clinicians that have the skills to become educators, researchers, and leaders in emergency medicine.

The successful candidate will join our growing Department in a non-tenure accruing position at the rank of Clinical Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. This position will hold a University of Florida appointment and become part of our current group of over 65 full-time EM faculty, 13 fellows, 42 residents and more than 200 members that make up our robust, dynamic department, to support the expansion of clinical services in our community and across the state.

As the primary referral center for North Central Florida, our institution stands as a beacon of excellence in healthcare. Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Medical Director for designated EMS agency partners and carry our administrative responsibilities inherent to the role
  • Provide medical oversight for certified EMS and fire rescue response personnel, including during mutual aid responses and disaster deployments
  • Establish, maintain, and annually review standards of care, BLS/ALS protocols, standing orders, and Trauma Transport Protocols; ensure training and compliance across EMS personnel
  • Develop prehospital practice parameters with consideration for patient outcomes, budgetary impact, and current evidence-based standards
  • Lead quality improvement and quality assurance initiatives; establish and revise agency performance standards in collaboration with EMS agency leadership
  • Serve as a patient advocate, ensuring systems are designed to place patient needs first
  • Collaborate with the EMS Fellowship Director to integrate UF EMS Fellows into EMS medical direction activities consistent with the Fellowship training program
  • Provide education and mentorship to EM residents, fellows, and EMS personnel in prehospital medicine
  • Collaborate with EMS leadership, county agencies, and departmental stakeholders to advance prehospital systems and patient care
  • Maintain clinical responsibilities as an attending physician in the UF Health Shands Emergency Department

Required Qualifications:

All physicians must be ABEM/ABOEM Board Certified/Board-Eligible in Emergency Medicine

Preferred
  • Fellowship training in EMS Medicine
  • Current ACLS certificate of completion
  • Demonstrated experience in EMS medical direction, protocol development, and prehospital system oversight
  • Working knowledge of Chapter 401, Florida Statutes and Chapter 64J-1, Florida Administrative Code governing EMS medical direction
  • ACEP EMS Medicine subspecialty certification
  • Prior experience as a county or regional EMS Medical Director
  • Experience developing and revising prehospital protocols and standing orders
  • Familiarity with Florida Department of Health EMS regulatory requirements and Trauma Transport Protocol submission processes
  • Experience with QI/QA program development in prehospital settings
  • Academic teaching experience with EM residents, fellows, or EMS personnel
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills across multi-agency environments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
