Job Description:

Research Project Compliance and Coordination

Works with PIs and laboratory personnel to efficiently generate and submit protocols and protocol amendments to IACUC, IRB, and EH&S to support research project completion. Liaise with staff and faculty (veterinarians) in those offices to promote efficiency of process to ensure smooth and timely protocol review. Responsible for understanding and compliance with all required laboratory regulations such as ACS, EH&S, IACUC, UF, State and Federal guidelines, maintains accurate records and legal documentation required by institutional policies such as biological, chemical, and radiation safety policies. Supports submission and compliance of licenses/registrations for substance and materials needed to engage in biomedical research with specific substances/materials.


Laboratory Business Management

Manage ordering processes to ensure efficient and cost-effective use of grant funding; maintain lab supply inventory to ensure supplies are available for scheduled research projects; researches and evaluates new products, compares and negotiates vendor prices. Orders reagents and materials to support lab operations. Follows-through with procedures required of the University to document and reconcile those transactions, including within myUFMarket and UFGo. Works within the guidelines of the Travel office to book travel for laboratory personnel and generate travel authorizations as needed.

Laboratory operations support and record keeping

Supports the direction of lab staff to aid in experiments to develop and validate new gene therapies to treat diseases of the muscle; trains lab staff in related methods; provides consultation, guidance; provides proper instruction on lab equipment use and maintenance; provides oversight to ensure accurate and thorough record keeping; aids the PI in the organization of data; prepares reports and graphs as requested by the PI.

Animal Care Oversight and Colony Management

Assists in maintaining mouse colony and efficient management of mouse strains, including possibly genotyping of mouse lines. Responsible for performance and oversight of pre- and post-operative animal care as needed, including possibly rodent surgical procedures. Coordinates animal care between the lab and institutional animal care staff as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Expected Salary:

$52,000 - $60,000 annually

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

SKILLS & ABILITIES

- Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments
- Proven ability to develop laboratory SOPs for rodent experimentation and care.
- Proven ability to maintaining training records.
- Proven ability to ensure compliance with federal and institutional animal care guidelines/policies.
- Proficiency in mouse and rat handling, special injection and surgical techniques, aseptic procedures.
-Ability in crafting regulatory protocols for IACUC, EHS, and IRB, including fluency in goIACUC and LATCH.

KNOWLEDGE

-Working knowledge of biology, including gene therapeutics, adeno associated viruses (AAV), muscle, immunohistochemistry, PCR.                                                                                                                        -Working knowledge of laboratory equipment purpose and use, including microscopes, centrifuges, and PCR machines.

-Additional hours may be needed to ensure the completion of research experiments and/ or to support lab  operations and equipment maintenance.
-Occasional needs will arise on the weekends requiring attention, especially given the need for this position to support animal care logistics.
