Job Description:

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida College of Medicine seeks an accomplished psychiatrist and academic leader to serve as Clinical Professor and Chief of Adult Psychiatry. This senior faculty position provides strategic, clinical, operational, and academic leadership for Adult Psychiatry programs across the UF Health system.

The Chief of Adult Psychiatry will oversee a comprehensive portfolio of inpatient, outpatient, and specialty psychiatric services while advancing excellence in patient care, education, research, faculty development, and program growth. The successful candidate will serve as a key departmental leader and collaborator, working closely with UF Health and College of Medicine leadership to shape the future of behavioral health services within a nationally recognized academic health center.

In addition to divisional leadership responsibilities, and depending on interest and clinical area of specialty, the incumbent may also serve as Chief of Inpatient Psychiatry and Medical Director of UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital, or as the Medical Director of the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic. 

Key Responsibilities

Strategic and Administrative Leadership

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership as Chief of Adult Psychiatry, overseeing adult psychiatric services across inpatient, outpatient, consultation liaison, and specialty programs.
  • Work closely with the service directors, medical directors, and Department leadership to ensure excellence in in clinical quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and program performance across all sites.
  • Depending on expertise and interest, serve as Chief of Inpatient Psychiatry and Medical Director of UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital.
  • Collaborate with departmental, College of Medicine, and UF Health leadership to advance strategic initiatives, program growth, and operational effectiveness.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop faculty and staff while fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability.

Clinical Service

  • Maintain an active clinical practice as an outpatient attending psychiatrist, as an inpatient attending psychiatrist at UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital, or as a consultation liaison psychiatrist at UF Health Shands Medical Surgical Hospital.
  • Provide direct patient care for individuals with complex psychiatric conditions.
  • Model excellence in patient-centered, evidence-based psychiatric care.

Specialty Program Leadership

  • Working with the departmental leadership and current faculty, support the growth and advancement of new approaches to psychiatric care, including but not limited to neurostimulation and interventional psychiatry services, through innovation, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice.

Academic and Research Activities

  • Contribute to the department's educational mission through teaching and mentorship of medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty.
  • Support clinical, translational, and scholarly activities that advance the department's academic mission and national reputation.
  • Participate in departmental, college, hospital, and professional service activities.

Service & Institutional Engagement

  • Serve on departmental, college, and hospital committees.
  • Contribute to policy development, strategic planning, and institutional initiatives.
  • Represent the department in regional, national, and professional organizations as appropriate.
Expected Salary:

Salary Commensurate with Experience

Required Qualifications:
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry.
  • Eligible for or able to obtain unrestricted Florida medical licensure.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic psychiatry, behavioral health administration, psychiatric hospital operations, or related healthcare settings.
  • Record of excellence in clinical care, teaching, and administrative leadership.
  • Qualifications consistent with appointments at the rank of Clinical Professor.
Preferred:
  • Experience serving as a Division Chief, Medical Director, Service Chief, Vice Chair, or comparable leadership role.
  • Experience in inpatient psychiatry operations and psychiatric hospital management.
  • Expertise in neurostimulation, interventional psychiatry, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), or related specialty services.
  • Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary teams within complex academic healthcare environments.
  • Experience with accreditation processes, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Evidence of scholarly achievement, educational excellence, and professional leadership.
  • Regional or national recognition through academic, clinical, research, or professional contributions.

About the Department of Psychiatry 

Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida are engaged in groundbreaking projects covering a variety of interests through our Centers, labs, and collaborations with other departments. The Department of Psychiatry includes a large outpatient center with various specialty clinics within (including one associated with our Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment), a very active inpatient service, psychiatry collaborative program for primary care practitioners, school consultation program, and community consultation services. The Department of Psychiatry spans services across adult, addiction, and child/adolescent specializations, including a freestanding psychiatric hospital, a large consult liaison service at the main UF Shands Hospital, the Florida Recovery Center operated by our Addiction Division, and multiple research centers including the Center for Addiction Research & Education and the Center for OCD and Related Disorders (COARD).
