Laboratory Technician I

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine is accepting applications for a Laboratory Technician I. A strong work attitude and attention to detail are a must. This position will primarily provide support for exposing mice to research-grade cigarettes using a whole-body exposure Teague device. Due to the access that will be required to the Animal Care Facility, numerous IACUC and EH&S training requirements exist. The successful candidate will be able to attend work on a set schedule and to work independently with minimal supervision.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include the following:

Utilize established methods to induce various biological responses in the lung by exposing mice inside a Teague machine to research grade cigarettes. Move mice from and to ACS housing, observe mice during their time in the smoking machine, monitor and document smoke levels. Take weekly weights. Weekly smoke exposure levels and weights should be kept in electronic form and discussed with the Principal Investigator and the lab manager.

Plan and conduct animal experiments outlined by the Principal Investigator and the lab manager. Genotyping might be necessary for some animals. Keep up-to-date electronic files of mice. Document IDs, weekly weights, and housing room / rack in the animal facility. Communicate any and all derivation from discussed experiments. Prepare sample tubes and help in downstream processing of experimental mice.

Perform maintenance of lab equipment (including but not limited to Teague machine, flexivent, mCT, MilliQ water purification system) as directed by Principal investigator. Ensure stock supplies and consumables are inventoried routinely. Assist with the storage and disposal of chemical and biological waste. Keep records of laboratory protocols and maintain a complete and accurate laboratory notebook.

Other duties as assigned.

$16.82 - $22.84 per hour; commensurate with education and experience.

Preferred applicant will have a degree in biology or a related field and 2+ years of experience in a laboratory environment.
