Job Description:

The Department of English at the University of Florida invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position to teach in the B.A. and Ph.D. programs in the field of British Romanticism and/or early Victorian literature, beginning August 16, 2027.

We welcome applications from all candidates with records of publication and teaching in field. We seek candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our community. The successful candidate will be expected to 1) maintain an active writing and publication career, 2) teach four courses per academic year at the undergraduate and graduate level, and mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, 3) contribute service to the Department, the University, and the profession. 

Program and Location

The Department offers vibrant courses and programs and houses the Edward C. Kirkland and Mary Kirkland-Johns Endowment for Victorian and folklore studies. The Department enjoys productive relationships with other units housed within and beyond the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, including the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere. The University’s strong library holdings include the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature and the Harold and Mary Jean Hanson Rare Book Collection. 

The University is a major comprehensive, land-grant, research-intensive university, ranked in recent years as among the nation’s top public universities. Gainesville, Florida is a city of approximately 150,000 residents in Alachua County. Expected Salary:

Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a full benefits package.

Required Qualifications: PhD, and record of research/publication and teaching experience in British Romanticism and/or early Victorian literature.
Preferred:

We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in British Romanticism and early Victorian literature. Our ideal candidate would have strengths in poetry or non-fiction prose, and secondary expertise in areas such as disability studies, animal/environmental/ecological studies, and visual culture.

For full consideration, applications must include: (1) a letter of application summarizing the applicant's qualifications, interests, and suitability for the position, (2) a complete curriculum vitae, including a list of three references, (3) a statement of teaching goals and practice. After initial review, writing samples will be requested of selected applicants, as well as letters of recommendation from the listed references. We expect to conduct Zoom interviews in December or January and host campus visits in the spring term.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications on November 1, 2026, and the position will remain open until filled. Applications received after this date may be considered at the discretion of the search committee and/or hiring authority.

The final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts to the Department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered "official" if a designation of "Issued to Student" is visible.
