| Job Description: |
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, non-tenure-accruing position at the rank of Lecturer beginning August 16, 2027, where the applicant must have the ability to teach courses in AI Ethics and Ethics of Technology. The position will be renewed yearly, contingent on funding and successful performance of assigned job duties. Lecturer positions at the University of Florida come with a full benefits package and have their own promotion track, parallel to that for tenure-track faculty, from Lecturer, to Senior Lecture, and finally to Master Lecturer.
Full-time lecturers are typically assigned 6 courses per academic year along with some service commitments for the department. Teaching assignments may include both undergraduate and graduate courses at all levels, and lecturers may (if they so desire) serve on dissertation committees. In addition to teaching courses in AI Ethics and Ethics of Technology, the successful candidate will have opportunities to teach advanced courses in their areas of specialization and are encouraged to develop such. Lecturers have regular voting rights in departmental governance and the opportunity to participate in governance across the university as well. In addition, they can apply for additional summer teaching jobs to help meet significant demand for the department’s courses
The department has grown substantially in recent years through a series of new hires. While it remains committed to robust coverage of all the core areas of philosophy, it has developed particular strengths in the ethics of technology and the philosophy of artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will join a department with a critical mass of colleagues working on these questions, within a university that has made artificial intelligence a defining institutional priority. The University of Florida is home to the HiPerGator AI supercomputer and was recently ranked first in the nation in an assessment of institutional AI readiness. The position therefore offers an unusually broad audience for teaching in AI ethics and rich opportunities for collaboration with colleagues in engineering, data science, law, medicine, business, and the social sciences.
