| Job Description: |
The Department of History at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is accepting applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), nine-month, tenure-accruing appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the history of the Indian Ocean world beginning August 16, 2027.
We invite applications from scholars of the Indian Ocean world, with an open chronological specialization and a focus on transregional dynamics – economic, migratory, legal, gender, environmental, social, cultural, and linguistic, among others. We are seeking a historian whose research is grounded in the histories, languages, and cultures of one or more specific region, i.e. South Asia, Southeast Asia, Eastern Africa, or the Middle East. At the same time, the candidate will be able to bridge regions of the Indian Ocean world and address teaching coverage needs in global history. In making this hire, the department seeks to build on and complement existing strengths in European empires and transoceanic and maritime history (of the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf) while also enabling the study of global histories not defined by European imperial expansion.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching a body of undergraduate and graduate students and maintain robust research and publication agenda commensurate with a top-tier research institution. Teaching responsibilities include introductory, upper-division, and graduate courses in Asian, African, or Middle East history as well as courses based on thematic approaches to world history and in the University’s Quest 1 program. The appointee will also contribute to the department’s graduate program through mentoring students, offering seminars, and chairing and serving on departmental and university committees, including those in other departments.
The position offers opportunities to engage with the University of Florida Libraries’ extensive collections and to benefit from the support, resources, and activities of several interdisciplinary centers and programs including the Center for African Studies, the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies, the Center for Latin American Studies, the Center for European Studies, the Bud Shorstein Center for Jewish Studies, the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, the Center for Arts, Migration and Entrepreneurship, and the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere.
