Under the direction of the Manager, Landscape and Irrigation Services in the Department of Facilities Services (DFS), maintain, diagnose, and repair outdoor power equipment to include; commercial mowers, landscape equipment, two and four cycle engines, hydraulic systems, electrical troubleshooting, and repair. Perform all aspects of University equipment use, maintenance and repair for the Landscape and Irrigation Services division to ensure an aesthetically pleasing, safe, and clean University environment. Collaborate with DFS and other University departments to complete assignments in high quality and timely manner.
Duties
- Build, assemble and maintain machines or mechanical components according to requirements. Inspect machines, engines, transmissions and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues. Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability. Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner.
- Inspect and service a wide range of light and heavy landscape equipment as necessary to maintain proper operating and safety standards. Place order for parts using parts manual for each individual unit.
- Responsible for the creation, organization, and maintenance of accurate maintenance records.
- Participate in various work activities associated with job assignment including gardening and manual labor tasks such as planting, fertilizing, weeding, trenching and other tasks.
- Ensure that all activities are performed in a safe manner and are in compliance with University and regulatory standards, procedures, codes, laws, and regulations. Immediately report any unsafe conditions observed or encountered while completing assigned work to your supervisor or other appropriate individual(s).
- Clean and apply lubricants to machinery components. Replenish fluids and components of engines and machinery.
- Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to machine or vehicle users. Undertake other duties as assigned (e.g. repair of hydraulic systems, painting).
- Safely and effectively operate powered equipment including, but not limited to, power mowers, edgers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and roto-tillers and any attachments.
- Able to sharpen rotary blades and/or knowledge on back lapping reels.

Skills and Qualifications
Required: High school education or equivalent is required. Two years of experience in repairing and maintaining equipment is required. Must consistently project a professional demeanor and positive attitude. Ability to work independently and as a team. Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds, and lift up to 50 pounds and carry the object 100 feet. Must hold a valid California Driver's license, maintain an acceptable DMV driving record, and remain insurable by University insurance carrier at all times while employed. Must be able to bring a current DMV driving record printout on the first day of employment. Willingness and ability to periodically work overtime hours, respond to emergency calls after hours/weekends, and work rotating weekend shifts is required. Ability to maintain effective teamwork, high work standards, and good employee morale. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds. Basic computer skills and competency with Microsoft Office and Google email. Knowledge and experience using a work order system.
Preferred: Some college/technical school preferred. Completion of an approved apprentice program or equivalent is preferred.

This is a Regular, Nonexempt, 40 hour per week position.
Expected Pay Range: $22.50 - $25.00 per hour
