Department Summary
The PREP Bio program is a one-year mentored research and professional development experience for postbaccalaureate students who are intending to pursue a doctoral degree in the life sciences. This is funded by a 5 year NIH R25 grant awarded to PIs Nadia Singh and Rori Rohlfs in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution. The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research.
The Institute of Ecology and Evolution promotes and facilitates research and graduate education in ecology and evolutionary biology. The Institute fosters a collegial and stimulating intellectual environment; supports the development of shared research facilities; and sponsors seminars, workshops, and colloquiums.
Position Summary
We are seeking a 0.5 FTE Program Coordinator (PC) for the UO PREP Bio program. This is a wonderful opportunity for an individual motivated to work directly with students in STEM. The successful candidate will apply administrative skills to help students navigate their futures in the sciences while collaborating and coordinating with a range of campus and community partners.
The PC will be responsible for managing daily operations for UO PREP Bio, including coordinating recruitment efforts (such as website development and updates), administering the application process, and supporting the PIs and Executive Committee in application review and scholar-faculty matching. The PC will support scholars in navigating the program, including connecting them to appropriate scholarly, institutional, and community resources. The PC will also work closely with the Program Directors to plan and host community-building social events, the weekly UO PREP Bio cohort meeting, and the seminar series. The PC will coordinate long-term alumni engagement and tracking. The PC will also be central in administering assessment tools and analyzing these data.
We are looking for a dynamic individual to assist with the coordination of programs to advance inclusion, diversity, and equity in biomedical research. The ideal candidate will have a strong service orientation supported by excellent interpersonal skills, data management abilities, strong computer skills, experience with social media, and strong presentation, writing, and editing skills. Strong organizational skills, ability to handle multiple priorities, and orientation to details are vital to success in this position. The position will require the ability to work independently, demonstrate sound judgment, and work closely and collaboratively with other PREP Bio team members. A significant fraction of the responsibilities will be student-facing, so the ability to engage with students, understand and work to support their needs, and build relationships will be key. Some evening and weekend work will be required for program community-building events. Candidates should be willing and able to travel as needed.
