Department Summary
The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon is a nationally accredited art museum that upholds the highest professional standards in security and operations. In addition to maintaining collections of Asian, European and American works of art, the museum routinely schedules traveling and special exhibitions, actively promotes community outreach programs, and proudly serves as an educational and academic resource for university and K-12 classes. The JSMA also operates the Shared Visions program, routinely receiving and displaying extremely high valued and culturally significant works of art.
Position Summary
The Security Officer reports to the Museum Security Administrator and is responsible for performing assigned duties independently or as part of a team. The security officer will ensure the safety and security of the museum collection and loans, as well as museum staff and members of the public. The Security Officer patrols in and around the museum, observes conditions and people, intervenes when necessary, to ensure the safety of the museum, it’s art, and the public. The Security Officer will monitor alarm systems and CCTV, evaluating and assessing situations, report situations and coordinate with UO PD, as needed. This position maintains building access and key control, keeps records of employees and visitors. This position is trained in evaluating critical environmental conditions within the museum and in critical areas of high value and vulnerable property and performs assessments daily. Officers will demonstrate excellent customer service abilities in assisting staff and the public. This position requires the ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy environment with accuracy and professionalism. Individuals in this position must work cooperatively with museum staff and other members of the security team, including fellow officers, student employees, temporary employees, volunteers, collectors and donors, faculty, and community members.
Physical Demands
• Ability to perform moderate physical exertion, including: standing and walking for extended periods of time, occasional running, use of stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
• Position subject to stressful and emergency situations, and interactions with angry, upset, distressed, or hostile people. Need to be able to react calmly and think rationally in emergency and life-threatening situations. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and understand and carry out complex instructions.
• Solely responsible for initial and final closing museum facility rounds: checking critical sensors, adverse humidity and temperature irregularities, water/moisture migration, or other environmental risks that could adversely affect extremely high valued and vulnerable works of art.
Special Requirements
• Ability to successfully pass basic First Aid/CPR/AED training.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background assessment, including criminal history, personal history, and prior employment history to determine candidate's capability and suitability to do security work.
Work Schedule
• Subject to night, weekend, and holiday duty where days/hours of shifts will vary.
• Must sign flexible work schedule agreement.
• May be required to work extra hours to cover shifts as needed.
Minimum Requirements
• High School Diploma or GED/equivalent.
• One year of experience communicating with the public.

• Knowledge of sophisticated electronic security and alarm systems and property protection techniques.
• Ability to take quick, appropriate action in stressful circumstances, maintain composure in emergencies and handle confidential information with discretion.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to use legible handwriting and to type accurately and efficiently using a standard computer keyboard.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working in institutions dedicated to objects of historical and/or cultural significance
• Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training certification
• Fluency in a second language
• Experience operating and administering Milestone and/or other network-based security technologies
• Knowledge of critical best practices for collection care and security as outlined by the American Association of Museums
