Position Summary
The Academic Advisor's primary responsibility will be to provide academic advising services to a diverse population of undergraduate students pursuing business degree programs. This will include providing small group and individual advising, meeting with prospective students and their families, and utilizing technology to communicate with College of Business students. This position will play an integral role in representing students and the needs of the Undergraduate Advising Office on College- and University-wide committees and may be called on to teach a 30-40-person first-year seminar.
The Undergraduate Advising Office of the Lundquist College of Business is a fast-paced, customer-focused office that serves over 4,600 pre-business, business, and accounting majors and minors. The Academic Advisor will be a member of a student services team that has a longstanding reputation for providing excellence in student services. The successful candidate will share in the commitment to meet the needs of students through innovative, high-quality, and efficient delivery of advising services. This position requires a strong commitment to serving the needs of students from all backgrounds, recognizing issues of equity, advocating for change on behalf of students, and working collaboratively in a collegial, supportive environment.
The Academic Advisor will work with faculty and staff from a variety of offices within the Lundquist College of Business and across the University campus including the Registrar's Office, Financial Aid, departmental offices, Center for Multicultural Academic Support, Accessible Education Center, Athletic Advising Services, Office of Academic Advising and Student Services, Admissions, and International Affairs. This position will also have program coordination responsibilities that may require working closely with outside partners.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelors degree.
• One year of student advising experience at the college/university level (or equivalent).
Professional Competencies
• Strong customer service orientation.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong computer skills.
• Excellent time management and organization skills.
• Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in business, counseling, student services, or a related field.
• At least three years of student advising experience at a college/university level in business, counseling, student services, or a related field.
• An understanding of issues of equity and the barriers that diverse students may face.
• Demonstrated experience working with a diverse group of students including those from a non-traditional background.
• Strong background in the use of technology and social media in the delivery of advising services.
• Knowledge of student development theory as it relates to academic advising.
• Strong record of innovative programming background.
