Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is the primary repository for the university’s archives, rare books, historic photographs, and one of the largest historical manuscript collections in the Pacific Northwest. It is the largest repository in the state that provides extensive public access to its collections and is thus a critically important source of Oregon and Pacific Northwest materials to be used for research and instruction.
Position Summary
In this position, you will assist in preserving, arranging, and describing modern manuscript and archival collections in all formats at the University of Oregon Libraries. As a member of the processing unit in Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA), you will develop processing plans, conduct research on collections, rehouse materials, and create descriptions for collections of unique materials. In collaboration with SCUA staff, you will also have the opportunity to participate in outreach and communication, including social media posts, professional presentations, and/or exhibits that highlight significant items or stories from assigned collections, thereby broadening the impact of SCUA’s collections and our mission. You will also support our public services by working shifts at the reference desk in the SCUA reading room, which is visited by UO students and faculty, Oregon community members, and visiting researchers from around the world.
This role comes with a special area of responsibility, focusing on the papers of retired Oregon Congressperson Peter A. DeFazio. You will be assisting with processing materials documenting DeFazio's decades-long career in the U.S. House of Representatives, including selected legislative files, campaign and political files, press files, personal files, selected constituent services, Congressional committee files, issue files, and audio-visual materials. You will play a key role in this ongoing project and will contribute to the department's mission and priorities. Join our collaborative and innovative team dedicated to promoting the preservation and access to historical records.
Funding for this on-site position is through May of 2026, based at the Eugene campus, and will work in the Baker Downtown Center and occasionally at the Knight Library. It reports to the Lead Processing Archivist within the Department of Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA).
Minimum Requirements
• A Bachelor's degree with major coursework (thirty quarter or twenty semester hours) in social research, public administration, history, political science or a closely related field; OR
• Two years of college level coursework AND two years of technical or research experience in archives; OR
• Four years of technical experience in archives involving automated archival systems including methods for automated archival storage and retrieval; OR
• An equivalent combination of training and technical experience in archives.

• Strong public service or customer service skills.
• Effective communication skills, including the ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively with individuals, recognizing and respecting the many and varied identities of each person.
• Experience performing complex and detail-oriented tasks.
• Ability to develop and complete plans and projects on time and with available resources.
• Ability to train student workers.
• Experience using common office software, particularly Microsoft Excel or other database software.
Preferred Qualifications
• Understanding of archival arrangement and description practices.
• Experience processing archival collections.
• Understanding of metadata, particularly Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS).
• Familiarity with archival or record center principles and operations.
• Experience or familiarity with ArchivesSpace or similar content management systems.
