About This Role:

The Kansas State University Department of Economics invites applications for a part-time 12-month academic advisor. The selected individual will assist students with course selection and navigating University resources; help students with long-range planning and finding the best options for their particular goals, and assist departments with recruiting prospective students. Hours can be flexible. Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Assist, challenge and support students in identifying and clarifying academic, career, and life goals and offer appropriate motivation and encouragement.
  • Be a proactive and constructive participant within an advising team dedicated to student success.
  • Accurately and efficiently communicate transfer credit and remaining degree requirements for timely graduation using online and offline resources.
  • Understand, convey, and implement academic policies, procedures, and protocols to students, parents, faculty, and other stakeholders, while upholding FERPA requirements and the highest ethical standards.
  • Assist students in resolving administrative issues related to their academic records and assist with the various duties related to course registration issues.
  • Maintain and update student records, such as meeting notes, records relating to degree progress, correspondence, and other documentation when appropriate.
  • Assist in the development of the implementation of new advising initiatives that promote student success, increase retention and graduation rate and enhance the student experience.
  • Recruit students to K-State and specifically the Economics program through university-sponsored events and campus visits.
  • Some travel, weekend, and evening hours are required.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • One year of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively interpersonally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations as well as faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong self-directedness and initiative to promote student success with minimal supervision
  • Proficient use of technology applications and student information systems
  • Sound judgment in working with discrete information and sensitive student records
  • Ability to manage large student caseloads in peak times such as during enrollment and registration
  • Experience in advising social science, liberal arts or related fields.
  • Demonstrated engagement in advising-related professional organizations/development
  • Experience with probationary students, transfer students, honors students
  • Experience utilizing EAB platforms to promote student success.
  • Effective recruiting experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advising and student development theories
  • Desire to advance the field of advising through active participation in the Kansas Academic Advising Network (KAAN) and the National Academic Advising Network (NACADA)

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
