The purpose of this position is to have a more consistent performance of duties which are currently performed by a number of Student Animal Technicians who have inconsistent hours dictated by their class schedules. Research Assistant - Molecular (Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory) Manhattan, Kansas
The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) Molecular Section is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant. This position will assist in completing polymerase chain reactions (PCR) for detecting infectious agents like viruses and bacteria in samples submitted to the KSVDL for evaluation. This position will involve assisting in the preparation of chemicals and reagents in a molecular biology laboratory, recovering nucleic acids from veterinary clinical samples, completing real-time and traditional PCR assays using standard protocols, being able to successfully complete proficiency testing, and assisting in maintaining records and equipment. In addition, this position is also responsible in assisting with SOP review and preparation, training new student employees, and engaging rotating interns as needed. This position will also assist and lead in various validation activities as needed. This is an essential position and may require variable work schedules, depending on workload.

Kearny County, population 4,026, is a two agent county located in southwest Kansas. Lakin is the county seat with Deerfield 9 miles to the east on U.S. Highway 50. The primary employers are farming and ranching operations, two school districts and the Kearny County Hospital. Extension agents are community based faculty of Kansas State University who make a difference by connecting community needs with university resources. Agents are administratively responsible to the local extension director and the local extension board. This position will provide primary leadership for the development and implementation of research-based educational programming related to agriculture and natural resources. Programming will include but is not limited to: agronomic and livestock production, agricultural economics, management and public policy, horticultural production and management, natural resources conservation, and environmental stewardship.
