About This Role:

The J.R. Macdonald Laboratory seeks candidates for a research faculty position in experimental ultrafast AMO physics.  The successful candidate will help manage the lab’s operations and contribute to the Lab’s Department of Energy-funded research.  The applicant’s research experience and interest should fit within JRML’s research focus.  A brief description of current research and publications can be found at

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) in the Physics Department.  The candidate must present credentials to justify appointment at this level, including a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in AMO physics or a related discipline.  Appointment at a higher rank might be considered in exceptional cases.

The successful candidate will have a strong desire to work in a diverse, highly collaborative, multi-investigator research environment.  The responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to): managing the 5 technical staff; maintaining the Lab’s physical infrastructure by working with Facilities and outside contractors; managing purchasing, inventory, and service contracts and visits; providing a needed technical expertise in support of the Lab’s research; working closely with the Director; and contributing to the Lab’s research productivity.  The candidate would not be expected to establish their own research group—they would, however, have the opportunity to collaborate with any or all of the groups in the Lab.

Why Join Us:

JRML has long been home to outstanding experimental and theoretical AMO programs, having been funded by DOE for well over 30 years.  Currently, the group consists of 5 experimentalists and 4 theorists along with their research groups.  The Lab has extensive laser facilities that are being used to address an array of forefront problems in AMO science, including investigations of the light-driven dynamics in atoms and molecules by employing state-of-the-art ultrafast intense laser and imaging techniques, as well as nonlinear optics and optical source development.
