About This Role:

This position is designed to support the KSU Swine Teaching and research Center day-to-day operations that are conducted in the farrowing house and nursery building. Oversight of farrowing and lactating sows and nursery pigs is the primary objective to ensure optimum animal health and well-being. Additionally, supporting other swine farm work and activities is required when needed and when the primary responsibilities are satisfied.

40%   Implement research according to protocols and assure the integrity of data collected in the farrowing and nursery phases of the Swine Teaching and Research Center.  Support the activities of graduate student-led research efforts to ensure that protocol objectives are met.  Supervise undergraduate employees that are working in the farrowing house and nursery 

20%    Monitor and assist sows when needed during the farrowing process. Responsible for overseeing daily feeding and watering of sows located in the farrowing house. Responsible for overseeing general health and well-being of sows when in the farrowing house. Responsible for managing the farrowing house equipment and environment. Cleaning and disinfection of environment between groups. Enter data on data recording databases when needed.  Assist with teaching activities that are conducted in this facility.

20%     Assure animal health and well-being of nursery piglets is achieved. Responsible for overseeing daily feeding and water availability of nursery pigs. Responsible for managing the nursery room equipment and environment. Cleaning and disinfection of environment between groups. Enter data aon data recording databases when needed. Assist with teaching activities that are conducted in this facility

10%     Support and enforce farm biosecurity principles established by herd veterinarian, faculty supervisor, and farm manager.

10%     Interact with farm veterinarian, faculty supervisor, other farm full time staff, and undergraduate work force to ensure other activities on the farm are completed and supporting optimum health and well-being of animals. Assist with day-today activities on the rest of the farm when required. Ability to operate tractor or other equipment as needed. Support other duties as assigned related to teaching, research, and extension.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Sciences or related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with production animals, preferably swine.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
