Director III, Info Technology
About This Role
The Director of IT Governance will lead the establishment and implementation of a comprehensive IT governance framework that aligns technology investments with K-State's strategic objectives. Embedded in the Division of Information Technology, this role will serve as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to the CIO and institutional leadership, and will emphasize cross-functional collaboration, transparency in decision-making, and institutional accountability.
This leader will also oversee the university's IT Project Management Office (PMO), ensuring that project portfolio management supports governance priorities, drives institutional efficiency, and delivers value across all major academic and administrative units.
This role is critical to our ongoing IT transformation initiative and will provide executive leadership with the strategic oversight needed to maximize technology value while effectively managing risks across the enterprise. The successful candidate will work closely with senior leadership, academic units, and IT teams to ensure technology decisions support K-State’s Next-Gen strategic plan.

Kansas State University's Division of Information Technology is committed to providing excellent IT services to the K-State community in support of the teaching, learning, research, and service missions. They offer a wide range of information technology and communications services. They provide leadership for developing and delivering computing and digital resources to K-State students, faculty and staff. The Division coordinates and manages central IT business services including Enterprise Systems, Portfolio & Project Governance, Infrastructure & Operations, Academic Applications, Information Security, and Academic IT and Research Support.

What You'll Need to Succeed
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a bachelor's degree and five to 10 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field with an IT focus
- Master’s preferred
- Minimum 7 years of progressive IT leadership experience with at least 5 years in IT governance, IT portfolio management, or strategic planning roles
- Higher education experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience in higher education IT environment, preferably at a research-intensive institution
- Experience leading large-scale IT transformation or governance implementation initiatives
- Technical and Professional Competencies
- Proven ability to design and implement governance frameworks in complex, matrixed environments
- Deep understanding of IT governance frameworks (COBIT, ITIL, ISO 38500, etc.)
- Experience with IT portfolio management and project governance methodologies
- Experience leading PMO teams and managing large, enterprise-level projects
- Strong knowledge of project management methodologies (e.g., PMP, ITIL, Agile)
- Leadership and Management Skills
- Proven ability to work effectively with senior executives and academic leaders
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with ability to think strategically
- Demonstrated success in building relationships and fostering trust and collaboration across academic and administrative units
- Experience managing cross-functional teams in matrixed organizations with strong facilitation and consensus-building skills
- Change management expertise with ability to drive cultural transformation
- Understanding of the unique value proposition and complexities of higher education
- Background in higher education administration or academic affairs
- Strong knowledge of enterprise architecture principles and practices
- Experience with vendor management and contract governance
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements in higher education settings
- Familiarity with research computing, data management, and academic technology needs
- Knowledge of emerging technologies and their governance implications
Additional licenses / registrations / certifications:
- Professional certifications in IT governance (CGEIT, COBIT, ITIL Expert, etc.) preferred
