ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LITERACY EDUCATION
The Zucker Family School of Education at The Citadel invites nominations and applications for a tenure- track Assistant Professor of Literacy Education position. Primary responsibilities include teaching in an online, graduate Master of Education in Literacy (with a focus on multilingual learners), while also teaching in The Citadel’s undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs. The successful applicant will be an excellent instructor in multiple modalities, to include synchronous and asynchronous online, hybrid, and face-to-face teaching. Courses are offered during the day and/or in the evening, and this position carries with it a 4-4 load. One course release per semester is typically awarded if a faculty member teaches a graduate-level course. Expectations also include service to the program, School, and College, with a specific focus on advising, recruitment, and building partnerships with area school districts and local non-profits focused on literacy and/or multilanguage learners. The successful applicant should be willing to travel locally to provide onsite coursework to graduate student cohorts as needed and should have strong abilities to work with school and district leaders to advocate for our programs. Finally, the successful applicant will contribute to scholarship in the field of literacy and/or multilanguage learners. The Citadel’s M.Ed. in Literacy Education is one of only 5 programs in South Carolina recognized by the International Literacy Association for preparation of literacy teachers and coaches.
The position reports to the Dean of the Zucker Family School of Education, Dr. Len Annetta, and will begin August 2025.
MINIMUM AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Essential requirements include:
- An earned doctorate from an accredited institution conferred no later than August 2025
- Specialization in literacy education with a particular emphasis on multilingual learners, early childhood education, elementary education, or a related field
- Strong collaborative skills and service-mindedness, including the ability to think consistently and well about community partnerships, as well as systems for instructional and program improvement;
- A record of innovative and dedicated teaching—in online, hybrid, and face-to-face contexts;
- A record of, or potential for, scholarly productivity; and
- A minimum of three years of K-12 teaching experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in working with multilingual learners and/or to candidates with expertise in P-6 literacy education. South Carolina has a fast-growing MLL population and ESOL certification coursework is now included in our MEd in Literacy Education. Preference will also be given to candidates with successful teaching experience in multiple modalities; a commitment to culturally and linguistically diverse populations; experience working with multilingual learners; and/or those who are committed to continual programmatic improvement and to community partnerships, both of which are integral to the ongoing success as of the Literacy Program in the Zucker Family School of Educatiion.
