The Student Success Advisor is a key member of the Office of Student Affairs, dedicated to fostering student success through proactive and student-centered advising. Under the direction of the Director of Advising, the Advisor will support multiple student success initiatives, including the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and student affairs programming, with the goal of enhancing student engagement, retention, and overall achievement. This role plays a critical part in helping students navigate their academic journey, overcome challenges, and reach their academic, career, and personal goals.
Primary Responsibilities:
Student Advising:
- Provide individualized and group advising to assigned cohorts of students, supporting their academic planning, course selection, and long-term goal setting.
- Guide students in identifying and utilizing campus resources that enhance their academic and personal success.
- Assist students in overcoming academic challenges by ensuring they understand institutional policies, procedures, and available support services.
- Monitor student progress, conduct proactive outreach, and implement early intervention strategies to support at-risk students.
- Contribute to the development and execution of retention and persistence initiatives that promote student success from enrollment through graduation.
- Maintain accurate records of advising interactions to track student progress and identify trends that inform student success initiatives.
QEP and Student Success Initiatives Support:
- Actively contribute to the implementation and evaluation of QEP initiatives, ensuring alignment with student success goals.
- Develop and deliver workshops, trainings, and engagement activities that support student learning, persistence, and academic achievement.
- Assist in assessing QEP outcomes and provide recommendations for continuous improvement to better serve students.
Student Affairs and Engagement Programming:
- Collaborate with campus partners to design and implement programming that fosters student success, engagement, and a sense of belonging.
- Support student development initiatives that align with The Citadel’s mission and contribute to student persistence and overall well-being.
- Attend student affairs events and activities, providing advising and additional support to students in various settings.
Additional Duties as Assigned:
- Stay current with best practices in academic advising and student success through professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Advising or the Office of Student Affairs to further student achievement and institutional goals.
Qualifications:
- Education: bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in academic advising, student affairs, or a related student success role.
- Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong understanding of student development theories and best practices in student success initiatives.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build meaningful relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Strong problem-solving abilities with a student-centered approach to addressing academic and personal challenges.
- Organizational and time-management skills to balance multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-focused environment.
- Proficiency in student success technologies such as DegreeWorks, Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, and knowledge of FERPA regulations.
Working Conditions:
- Position Type: Full-time, temporary position (funded through AY 2028-2029).
- Benefits: Eligible for health benefits.
- Schedule: Some evening or weekend hours may be required for student support activities.
- Travel: Occasional travel may be required for professional development opportunities.
