Job Responsibilities
The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is seeking a Systems Engineer in the Information Technology Department. The position plays a key part in delivering reliable technology services to students, faculty, and staff, while aligning with institutional goals and compliance requirements. In addition, this role is responsible for the following:
- Maintain/monitor storage both physical and virtual server infrastructure supporting academic and administrative systems; to include managing hypervisors (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) to ensure optimal performance, availability, and resource allocation across virtual environments. Responsibilities also include patching, backups, Disaster Recovery, and performance tuning of critical systems.
- Lead and/or support IT projects (system migrations, hardware refreshes, and software deployments).
- Collaborate with academic departments and administrative units to align technology solutions with institutional goals.
- Administers Microsoft Azure, Entra ID, and other cloud-based services.
- Manages identity and access for students, faculty, and staff, including Single Sign-On (SSO) and Microsoft 365.
- Implement and maintain security protocols, manage access controls, and ensure compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and other higher ed regulations. Monitor systems for vulnerabilities and respond to incidents.
- Serve as a senior technical resource for resolving complex issues escalated from help desk or departmental IT staff. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members and collaborate across IT units.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in computer system development and modification. Relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Advanced understanding of IT infrastructure design, monitoring, testing, and maintenance, including physical and virtual server environments. Proficiency in computer and server hardware, virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V), cloud services (e.g., Microsoft Azure, Entra ID), and scripting tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft, CompTIA, VMware) are preferred but not require.
