Job Responsibilities
 
The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is accepting applications for a full-time, in-person Instructional Designer and Technologist in the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CEITL). This position is based on campus in Charleston, South Carolina and reports directly to the Director of CEITL. Remote and hybrid arrangements are not available. The successful candidate will apply best practices in instructional design and multimedia development to support faculty in building high-quality online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses. Additional responsibilities include:
  • Assists in the development, configuration, and implementation of the college's learning management system (Canvas).
  • Troubleshoots problems and coordinates upgrades with the appropriate system administrator. Serves as a subject matter expert on the learning management system.
  • Partners with faculty to build and refine their Canvas courses, providing hands-on design, development, and course setup support.
  • Designs and maintains training and resource courses within the learning management system to support faculty, staff, and student use of instructional technologies.
  • Plans, develops, and implements new instructional and technical tools, including AI-enhanced instructional technologies.
  • Supports the ongoing assessment of instructional effectiveness for existing and future online programs and courses.
  • Trains and supports faculty in ensuring course materials and digital content meet accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1 AA and ADA Title II requirements.
  • Trains faculty and staff on new technologies, including AI tools and applications, as well as standard productivity software.
  • Develops, coordinates, and delivers online orientation and training sessions for students, faculty, and staff, including coordination with Academic Orientation.
  • Creates and maintains training and support materials, ensuring they remain current and are effectively publicized to the campus community.
 
Minimum Qualifications
 
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in instructional technology and/or online education.
  • Experience using Canvas or a comparable learning management system.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and able to work effectively under deadline pressure.
  • Proficient with Windows, Microsoft Office, and multimedia authoring tools.
  • Must be able to work on campus in Charleston, South Carolina. This position is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Some weekend and evening work may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, or a related field.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and their application in instructional design and higher education.
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility standards and remediation practices.
  • Experience with Quality Matters or a comparable course quality review framework.
