The successful candidate will posses thorough knowledge of occupational safety and health, including industrial hygiene (OSHA), hazardous materials management and environmental law EPA and ADEC), as well as general knowledge of the principles, practices and theories of risk management, emergency management, safety planning, child abuse and molestation prevention practices and regulations (protection of minors), and general contracts.
This position requires someone who is technically proficient in the above areas, is an effective communicator and consensus builder, is adept at persuasion, has the ability to mentor staff, and is able to stay current with trends and changes in applicable law and regulation.
Additionally, you will need to possess excellent organization and prioritization skills, have the ability to travel to UAF rural sites (required), and you must have or be able to obtain an Alaska Driver's License and able to pass a background check.
PREFERRED:
Perform physical duties associated with the typical office environment. Site visits and inspections could require extensive walking and the ability to crawl, climb, crouch, kneel, and lift up to 30 pounds with or without mechanical assistance.
To thrive in this position, the applicant should have a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental, health, safety, and/or risk management within a complex operation, as well as professional training and/or education in one or more fields related to EHSRM program responsibilities. These include occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials management, environmental regulations (air quality, water, spill prevention), risk management, protection of minors, and emergency management. The applicant should also have a minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience and an ability to work across disciplines with a diverse array of stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in relevant field and six years progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. PhD preferred.
Bachelor's degree with major coursework in environmental science/engineering, occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, public health, health science, chemistry or related field preferred.
One or more of the following certifications are preferred: Professional certification in safety (CSP), industrial hygiene (CIH), risk management (ARM), engineering (PE), or hazardous waste management (CHMM) is preferred.
A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria is required.
Position Details:
This position is on-site and located on the Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 84, based on education and experience.
