Position Summary:

HAARP is seeking experienced maintenance technicians who routinely perform skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks, including heavy equipment operations, road maintenance, and snow removal. HAARP maintenance technicians also play a critical role in operating and monitoring a 12-megawatt diesel power plant, ensuring power is available for research campaigns. These are temporary Local 6070 union positions in Gakona that may result in permanent positions. Position classification is dependent upon candidate experience. A good driving record is required. US CITIZENSHIP IS REQUIRED.

The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is the world’s most capable high-power, high-frequency (HF) transmitter for the study of the ionosphere. The principal instrument is the Ionospheric Research Instrument, a phased array of 180 HF crossed-dipole antennas spread across 33 acres and capable of radiating 3.6 megawatts into the upper atmosphere and ionosphere. The goal of the research at HAARP is to conduct fundamental study of the physical processes at work in the very highest portions of our atmosphere, called the thermosphere and ionosphere.

The Geophysical Institute’s HAARP site supports the National Science Foundation’s Subauroral Geophysical Observatory (SAGO), a research laboratory dedicated to exploring Earth’s upper atmosphere and geospace environment. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently and in a group setting, including following, interpreting, and communicating instructions given by management. The candidate will be able to assist with power plant maintenance and operations, including preflight startup checklist, start procedures and operations, power to array, and shutdown. The candidate will have experience using heavy equipment, including forklifts, graders, and brush mowers. The candidate will be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. The candidate will be able to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. The candidate will be able to research, analyze, and resolve parts discrepancies, including purchases, shipments, and delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum requirements for these positions are apprentice level or other equivalent certification appropriate to the specific trade, with a minimum of three years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position Details:

This position is located on the HAARP campus in Gakona, AK., This is a full-time, Local 6070 position. New hires will be placed on the Local 6070 payscale, Grade may range from Maintenance Service Worker IV (MSW4) to Crafts and Trades (CT2),  is based on education and experience.

This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains open until June 30, 2025

Salary Information: New hires will be placed on the Local 6070 payscale, Grade may range from Maintenance Service Worker IV (MSW4) to Crafts and Trades (CT2),  is based on education and experience. (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wage Grade Schedule).
