Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS), a regional public university in Southeast Alaska, is recruiting for the position of Provost. The position is located in Juneau, Alaska’s vibrant capital city. UAS seeks a Provost who is an experienced and innovative academic leader who will work collaboratively with faculty and staff to promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate student learning, teaching, and research. UAS’ mission emphasizes student-centered learning through instruction in liberal arts, professional, and technical fields. On the homelands of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples, UAS serves the coastal environments, cultures, economies, and communities of Alaska through interdisciplinary education, workforce development, and scholarship, research, and creative activity. The successful applicant will have experience promoting success of non-traditional and diverse student populations including, for example, first-generation college students and those from Indigenous and other minority populations not commonly represented in post-secondary education.

The University of Alaska Southeast seeks a vibrant, visionary, and collaborative academic leader who will serve as the next Provost of the institution.

The University of Alaska Southeast is located in the traditional territory of the Lingít, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples, a majestic array of islands, channels, fjords, coastal mountains, icefields, and glaciers. On our three campuses, which are located in Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka, students have opportunities for field study, research, creative production, and internships and other forms of experiential learning in the Tongass National Forest, in coastal marine environments, with local businesses, and with city and borough, state, and federal government entities. Juneau, an epicenter for Northwest Coast Arts, and our state capital, provides ample opportunities for student internships within Alaska’s legislature, study and research within temperate rainforests and coastal habitats, and artistic and craft production in weaving, ceramics, and carving. Ketchikan, home to our Maritime Training Center, works closely with the United States Coast Guard to provide training and credentialing for Alaska’s maritime workforce. Sitka, hosting programs in Applied Fisheries, Health Information Management and Law Enforcement Training, prepares Alaskans for public service in these vital fields. All three campuses have a strong commitment to the preservation of the culture, arts, and languages of the Indigenous peoples of Southeast Alaska as well as to serving the workforce needs of the state.

Reporting to the Chancellor of UAS and serving as the Chief Academic Officer of the university, the provost is a beacon of excellence for the faculty and staff within Academic Affairs and drives student success. The provost will have a deep understanding of the complexities, challenges, and opportunities associated with postsecondary education and will possess the skills necessary to collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to achieve the desired goals of the university. A commitment to shared governance is a hallmark of the successful candidate. The provost is also responsible for nurturing innovation among the broad array of programs we offer while advancing financial sustainability within the umbrella of Academic Affairs. As a member of the UAS Cabinet, the Provost is a critical strategic partner who will bring their vision and experience to the team that leads the university. The position of Provost is dedicated to fostering a safe, supportive, and open environment at the University of Alaska Southeast. UAS prioritizes inclusive access to resources and opportunities for all individuals to reach their full potential, recognizing the importance of cultural safety and belonging for present and future success.
