The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Gastroenterology is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist – Gastroenterology vacancy.  

We are seeking motivated and experienced Staff Specialists in Gastroenterology who can hit the ground running. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience managing and supervising patients autonomously. The position involves management of patients in General Gastroenterology, chronic liver disease, both diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopy; and will be particularly attractive to those interested in IBD and Intestinal Ultrasound.

The successful candidate will provide specialist diagnosis, treatment, and care for public patients. They will provide a consultative service in Gastroenterology to other disciplines within the Department of Health.

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.  All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The gastroenterology unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital is the largest in the state with a current complement of 9 consultants, 2 registrars and 2 junior medical officers. The successful appointment to this position will increase consultant full-time equivalents to 7.5. The unit provides the usual inpatient management of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary services to GE unit in-patients with consultation services to all other units in the hospital, outpatient services across general gastroenterology, IBD and hepatology are also routinely provided as are all the usual gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures including ERCP and EUS. On call frequency will be 1:8.

The Role

  • Provide a consultant role in Gastroenterology.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care to public and private patients of the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) in Gastroenterology.
  • Be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and to be actively involved in research.
  • Undertake quality improvement activities.

Salary

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range* for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.

  • Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range* $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award
  • *Salary range effective 1 January 2025 as per the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full-time hours) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,389 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 pro rata per annum.
  • Relocation allowance.
  • On call allowance % of Base Salary.
  • All other allowances as per current Award.
  • And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Other Benefits:

  • You will have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
  • You will also have access to accommodation and relocation costs.

Details of Appointment

Fixed term, full-time day work (with on-call 1:8), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible for 3 years.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.

Essential Requirements

  • Holds specialist registration; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.  The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
    1. Crimes of violence
    2. Sex related offences
    3. Serious drug offences
    4. Crimes involving dishonesty
  2. Identification check
  3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience in assessment and management of IBD and/or Liver disease
  • Experience in Intestinal Ultrasound is desirable
  • Experience in assessment and management of motility disorders including oesophageal manometry/pH testing would be desirable but not essential
  • Interventionalist doing ERCP/EUS not required
