Learn new skills and build confidence caring for complex patients with multiple injuries. The Royal Hobart Hospital Trauma Service has positions available for trauma registrars in 2026.
The Trauma Service cares for over 1000 injured patients each year (> 300 major trauma presentations). As a trauma registrar you will be a key member of our admitting trauma unit, working alongside medical specialists from diverse backgrounds, as well as trauma case managers and experienced allied health practitioners.
We can offer accredited training with CICM (medicine time – 6 months) and ACEM (including accreditation for TS4 trainees – 6 months). Trauma service time also satisfies RACS requirements for critical care exposure. We welcome trainees from any specialty who want to learn how to provide comprehensive, roadside to rehabilitation care of trauma patients.
The Trauma Service is a consultant-led service, and you will be well supported by our staff specialists who are on site seven days per week. Your roster will include a combination of early, late and weekend shifts (~ 1:3), with minimal rostered overtime. An average day would include a ward round, consults, tertiary surveys and trauma call attendance. You will also be an important member of regular multidisciplinary team meetings.
The Trauma Service provides five hours of protected teaching time per week for medical staff. Every second week there is an afternoon of structured teaching and simulation. In alternate weeks, time is made available for self-directed learning, supported by a logbook and a wide catalogue of online modules and external resources. There will also be opportunities to engage in research and quality improvement activities, drawing on comprehensive data from the Tasmanian Trauma Registry and supported by our full-time clinical research coordinator.
Time with the trauma service will be an excellent foundation for any future medical career. We welcome any questions you may have and hope you will consider applying to join our team.
