Job description:

The redevelopment of Macquarie Point is an urban renewal project in central Hobart, which will see a former industrial site revitalised into an exciting mixed-use precinct incorporating a multipurpose stadium. The Design Manager will develop and oversee the execution of design guidelines for development across the Macquarie Point site; oversee and advise on the finalisation of the design of the multipurpose stadium; and lead design alignment and coordination across the site. The role will oversee project planning, design, and execution, manage budgets, and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver high-quality design solutions on time and to budget As a senior leader in the Corporation, the Design Manager has responsibility for contributing to and maintaining a positive, delivery-focused culture across the organisation that balances the Corporation’s strategic, financial, people, risk and stakeholder management objectives.

We are seeking an exceptional senior design leader to join our team as Design Manager, driving design excellence, coordination and delivery across the Macquarie Point Precinct, including the multipurpose stadium and broader mixed-use development.

This is a landmark role for a strategic and solutions-focused professional with deep expertise in architecture, design coordination and complex project environments who thrives in influence, integration and design leadership.

About the Role

As the Design Manager, you will lead and oversee design activities across a portfolio of complex capital projects. You will:

  • Lead pre-construction design activities across multiple large-scale projects to ensure quality and timely delivery.
  • Provide expert architectural, design and technical advice to the Executive, Board and governance bodies.
  • Drive the development and implementation of design strategies, guidelines and reporting frameworks across the precinct.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including architects, engineers, consultants and contractors to deliver integrated design outcomes.
  • Oversee procurement-ready design documentation and support tender and contracting processes.
  • Review and approve design documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory, technical and project requirements.
  • Lead Building Information Modelling (BIM) strategy and implementation across the Corporation.
  • Manage stakeholder engagement to resolve design challenges and align outcomes across government, partners and delivery teams.
  • Identify and manage design risks, including safety in design and project interface coordination.

What You Will Bring

To succeed in this role, you will demonstrate:

Design Leadership and Delivery Expertise

  • Proven experience leading design outcomes across complex infrastructure, urban development or major capital projects.
  • Strong capability coordinating multidisciplinary teams to deliver aligned, construction-ready design solutions.

Strategic and Technical Capability

  • Deep knowledge of architectural, urban design and construction processes, standards and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to develop innovative, practical solutions while managing risk, ambiguity and competing priorities.

Stakeholder Engagement and Influence

  • Highly developed communication and negotiation skills, with experience managing complex stakeholder environments.
  • Ability to influence outcomes and resolve competing interests to achieve high-quality design results.

Governance and Risk

  • Experience establishing design governance frameworks, guidelines and reporting processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, mitigate and escalate design risks effectively.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Architecture or a related discipline (essential).
  • Significant experience in design delivery, architecture or urban development (highly regarded).
