Duties and Responsibilities:
1. The Center for Academic Success’ Graduate Assistantships (GA) are twelve-month positions – starting June 1, 2021.
2. GAs teach 4 sections of University Life – the one credit CORE course required of all first semester freshmen. This is a graded course – required for graduation. You will be responsible for classroom management (25 students per class), instruction, review of all work, and final grading due in December.
3. As the “instructor/advisor” for the students, GAs teach and advise approximately 100 students. You will learn their majors and their required courses and ensure that they are in the appropriate courses for their major.
4. You are expected to abide by all policies/procedures in the Center for Academic Success (such as utilizing COMPASS, Blackboard, COGNOS, etc. to document your work).
5. GAs are expected to instruct the SKIL-1104 College Success Skills class or the CORE 1001 University Life course in the spring semester.
6. GAs may be asked to be an Academic Coach for an undergraduate student in the spring semester. Training will be provided.
7. During the summer months GA will be trained as an advisor and in classroom management and instruction.
8. GAs will contribute to the development of the University Life curriculum.
9. June and July are highest volume; then fall semester while teaching and advising.
10. You will help register students on an individual basis starting June 1st.
11. Working at least one Open House or Pirate Preview during the year is required (these are held on weekends).
12. GAs may be asked to participate in other projects or functions as directed by the Assistant Dean and/or the Vice President of Student Services
Required Qualifications:
- Candidates are expected to commit to one year
- GAs are required to work 20 hours per week – your choice of hours, except during training (June 1 – 12, M-F). The 20 hours need to be spread over 3 or more days and do not include your lunch break (which is required).
- You must be available Tuesday mornings during the 12 months – 9:00am to 10:30am for staff meetings.
- GAs must attend Freshman Convocation (usually held the Sunday before start of classes).
