Responsibilities:

  • The Biology Peer Advisor will work under the guidance of assigned departmental faculty advisor and the departmental Advising Coordinator. Duties will be as follows:

    BPAs will meet with assigned advisees and discuss topics such as college life, course selection classes (sequence and timing), potential post-graduate paths, GRE/MCAT guidance, and other items.

    BPAs will assist newer students become more familiar with regulations and expectations that are given in the Student Code of Conduct (a.k.a. Student Handbook), as well as serving as a positive role model for their advisees.

    BPAs will work with the Advising Coordinator and department advisors to help formulate potential recommendations for students seeking assistance.

    BPAs may help coordinate sessions with guest speakers (e.g., former undergrad or grad students who are now engaged in graduate studies or are in a professional role as a result of their undergraduate preparations/work.) As such, some meetings with advisees can be one-to-one, others would be small-group sessions.

    BPAs will meet with assigned biology faculty advisors for guidance, technical information regarding Peer Advisement, and student information exchange. Peer Advisors would also brief faculty advisors on topics they encounter with advisees.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be a junior or senior level with fulltime enrollment.

    Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA with satisfactory completion of Biology coursework.

    Must be able to work independently or in a group setting.

    Must be punctual and possess excellent record keeping skills.

    Must have the willingness to help students successfully transition to university life and make informed decisions.

    Must have excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and problem-solving skills.

    Must be able to observe student confidentiality rules and handle information with discretion.

    Must serve as a positive role model demonstrating good judgement and ethical behavior.

    Must have the ability to work with the diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

    Have a familiarity with SHUs academic and support services.

    Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
