Position Function:
The Extension Associate I will assist Mississippi Water Resources Research faculty and staff in the planning, implementation, evaluation, documentation, and reporting related to educational programs and grant-funded projects; provide technical assistance; and prepare specialized publications for general audiences. The Extension Associate I will help organize and recruit candidate schools and child-care facilities eligible for lead testing in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s WIIN Act. Additionally, the Extension Associate I will serve as the main point of contact with participating schools for preparing for sampling events as well as the primary collector of water samples. Some out-of-town, overnight travel is required, as well as early morning sample-collecting trips
Employees hired into Intermittent positions are limited to working no more than 720 hours per fiscal year.

Department Profile:
Located on the campus of Mississippi State University, the Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute administers and coordinates research and outreach programs dealing with water and related resources. It is one of the state institutes authorized by Section 104 of The Water Resources Research Act of 1984. Its activities are developed in close consultation and collaboration between the Institute and leading water resources officials within the state. The program's purpose is to provide a coordinated research and development program that contributes to the solution of water and water-related land use problems in Mississippi, the region, and the nation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Help MWRRI faculty and staff in the preparation, coordination, implementation, and reporting of programmatic efforts to fulfill contractual agreements. Assist MWRRI faculty and staff in addressing the needs of schools and child care centers as they relate to drinking water quality and lead in drinking water. Duties include but are not limited to:
• Maintains database and performs data entry
• Samples drinking water at schools and child care facilities according to quality management plan
• Provides quarterly reports in a timely manner
• Communicates sample results and potential solutions to program participants in a timely manner
• Represents MWRRI at conferences by submitting abstracts, delivering presentations, and recruiting at vendor fairs
• Delivers continuing education programs for a variety of audiences
• Develops working relationships with participating schools and child care facilities, officials of state agencies, and allied industries to promote
the educational activities of the WIIN grant program
• Maintains all records for WIIN grant program for its duration
Minimum Qualifications:
• An earned Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in a related field.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
• An earned Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in civil and environmental engineering, Extension
education, child development, or agricultural economics.
• Previous experience with outreach programs, water sampling, early childhood education, development and delivery of Extension
programs, or community engagement
• Demonstrated ability in public speaking
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Able to prioritize jobs and meet deadlines
• Sufficient interpersonal skills to effectively interact with government and university officials, the general public, early childhood educators,
and colleagues
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency in the use of computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
• Able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time without a break
• Able to load, unload, and transport up to 50 lbs. of water samples, program materials, and audiovisual equipment
• Able to drive, possibly for several hours, to water sampling locations
• Able to comply with any federally mandated health guidelines for entering child care facilities or schools, e.g. temperature checks and
masks
