Position Function:
The Geosystems Research Institute (GRI) at Mississippi State University seeks a highly motivated and self-driven research scientist to research computational issues in agricultural and natural resources. A focus on models dealing with animal disease transmission is desired. The successful applicant may be asked to help develop and present training material to small audiences and via online methods. They may be asked to participate in the preparation and writing of grant/contract applications and reports and may serve as (co) author on scientific research manuscripts.
Employees hired into Intermittent positions are limited to working no more than 720 hours per fiscal year.

Department Profile:
Established in 2000, the Geosystems Research Institute is a collaborative of academic scientists, engineers, and government and industry stakeholders active in conducting research to advance knowledge and practice in earth and it's systems to improve policy and public awareness. The Geosystems Research Institute's approach to research provides an avenue for Mississippi State University to build strong relationships with local, regional, and national agencies and businesses to do work aimed at solving some of today's most pressing environmental issues. In helping carry out Mississippi State University's mission of service and outreach, the Geosystems Research Institute offers a variety of educational opportunities and services to assist researchers, state and federal entities, and the public in utilizing geospatial technologies and data.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Research on computational-related agriculture and natural resource issues.
• Assist subject matter experts in moving their code from less capable computing environments into a high-performance computing environment.
• Disseminate results in archival literature via journals and conferences.
• Disseminate results via oral presentations at conferences and local meetings.
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Research Scientist I - Ph.D. Generally within three years after receiving their
Ph.D. and with limited scientific research experience
Research Scientist II - Ph.D. Three to seven years of relevant experience beyond
the Ph.D. level and with very significant professional accomplishments
Research Scientist III - Ph.D. More than seven years of relevant experience
beyond the Ph.D. and with extremely significant professional accomplishments
Senior Research Scientist - Ph.D. Individuals well beyond the Ph.D. that have
demonstrated outstanding sustained, and extraordinary professional accomplishments as well as professional leadership
Preferred Qualifications:
• Appointment to this position requires an earned doctorate in agriculture, natural resources, or closely related field.
• Demonstrated / documented experience in high performance computing model development and deployment.
• Ability to code in R and python, or similar expertise.
• Scientific manuscript development and publication experience.
• Expertise in training material development and delivery.
• Experience beyond traditional academic training.
• Demonstrated presentation experience to varied audiences.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• An earned doctorate in agriculture, natural resources, or a closely related field.
• Knowledge of one or more animal-movement models that require extensive computational resources to execute efficiently and effectively.
• Demonstrated / documented experience in high performance computing model development and deployment.
• Ability to code in R and python, or similar expertise.
• Scientific manuscript development and publication experience.
• Expertise in training material development and delivery.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
Routine deadlines, usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressure from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically, ability to distinguish colors.
