Performs construction repairs and maintenance duties as needed by the university, including operating heavy equipment and machinery

Salary Grade:  UC

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Estimate, plan, and coordinate maintenance, construction, demolition, renovation, and related projects.
2. Supervise, schedule, and assign work of assigned employees and outside contractors; and monitor their work to assure proper staffing and quality standards.
3. Fabricate and install forms for poured-in-place materials. Pour and finish concrete
4. Inspect jobs, equipment, and tools in order to assure compliance with codes, guidelines, University standards, and safety rules.
5. Verify and approve requisitions; order, control and account for supplies and equipment to maintain an adequate inventory for assigned projects; document and approve job time and materials used.
6. Inspect plans, prints, sketches, and specifications for assigned projects and related jobs and provide technical assistance.
7. Inspect streets, parking areas, sidewalks, and drainage structures for maintenance and repair needs.
8. Construct, erect, install, repair, or demolish structures, components, or fixtures associated with streets, parking areas, sidewalks, drainage, or buildings, by using hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment.
9. May perform routine welding in support of primary assignment. Perform the survey, layout, and collection of data needed in the design or construction of streets, parking areas, sidewalks, and drainage structures.
10. Determine the type and dimensions of materials and components to be used.
11. Interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications.
12. This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include overseeing the safe use of equipment and materials and maintaining safety standards for the support staff when working in hazardous or dangerous conditions.
13. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility:
May be responsible for training, assisting, or assigning tasks to others.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent High School Diploma or GED

Experience:
6 yrs. experience in commercial, industrial, or residential construction using heavy equipment.

Substitutions:
Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources Management.

Certification or Licensure Requirements:
Valid Driver’s License required, and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety
precautions of the trade.
Knowledge of applicable codes, rules, and regulations.
Skill in reading and interpreting blue prints.
Developed supervisory skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Physical Requirements/ADA
Frequent, heavy, or intense physical requirements combined with exposure to a number of disagreeable elements, such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals. Constant precautions required.

Occasional-Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; travel or other inconveniences have advance notice; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.

Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing, or balancing, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Job occasionally requires sitting, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting more than 100 pounds.

Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
