Position Function:

Assists all student-athletes with studying and testing techniques as well as developing academic game plans and routines for those who need assistance. The learning specialist also provides assistance to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics, Assistant Director for Athletic Academics, and the Athletic Academic Counselors in order to facilitate the academic development and progress of student-athletes toward degree completion as well as other duties assigned by the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Assistant Director for Athletic Academics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Administers ADHD Self-Screener, Background Questionnaire, Writing Prompt and SATA to all first-year student-athletes.
2. Coordinates and implements individualized academic support plans for identified student-athletes including assessment and evaluation of individual students to determine academic needs and additional support.
3. Provides instruction to assigned student-athletes related to study skill development, time management, critical reading, note taking, test taking strategies and overall academic success, such as the Bridge Program.
4. Co-coordinates the Bridge Program.
5. Assists with the maintenance of student-athlete academic programs for student-athletes who have documented learning disabilities.
6. Communicates verbally and in writing with the academic staff about the progress of assigned student-athletes.
7. Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising of assigned Larning Services Support Staff.
8. Manual for assigned group of Learning Services Support Staff.
9. Assists with on-campus recruiting as needed during the week or weekend.
10. Assists with student-athlete orientation.
11. Assists with departmental record keeping activities such as student-athletes records and support staff records.
12. Provides assistant with departmental liaison activities such as the MSU Office of Student Support Services. Serves as a resource to staff and coaches in the areas of learning development, disability identification and referral, providing training in the areas as needed.
13. Assist in coordinating and conducting Learning Services Support Staff orientation and aid in organizing additional training events.
14. Conduct one-on-one meetings with assigned at-risk student-athletes.
15. Assist the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services/Executive Director of Athletic Academics with other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree with a focus in Education, Counseling, or related field. Two years' experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Preferred Qualifications:

Working knowledge of NCAA and SEC rules.
Previous experience working in an Athletic Academic Office and/or working with at-risk student athletes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Familiar with Microsoft Office and other pertinent software programs.
- Knowledge in effective learning strategies, motivational techniques, and study skill development.
- Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgement and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA guidelines.
- Skill in working independently and following through on duties with minimal directions.
- Ability to work effectively with others in situations that may be time sensitive or otherwise highly pressured, including students, coaches, academic personnel, faculty and staff.
- Ability to interact diplomatically with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
- Outstanding listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Outstanding communication skills; both oral and written.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
- No or very limited physical effort required.
