The Assistant Manager of Computing Systems assists with design, maintenance, and administration of multiple, high-availability servers, networking equipment, mass storage devices, and related electronics infrastructure. Position is also responsible for coordinating center policies and responses to audits of disaster recovery/business continuity, IT Asset-Based Risk Assessment, IT Change Management, and Security Protocols management. The Assistant Manager of Computing Systems should have a thorough understanding of deploying and maintaining physical and virtual servers (VMware) for a wide range of computer applications in a large-scale, high-availability, enterprise environment running a variety of operating systems.

Salary Grade:  16

Anticipated Appointment Date:

April 2025. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist with design, research, evaluation, and implementation of virtual server systems and underlying physical host servers in a predominately VMWare environment.
2. Assist with managing data backup systems including backup appliances, offsite backup systems, backup networks, and all associated infrastructure.
3. Install patches and upgrades to server hardware, firmware, and software.
4. Responsible for implementing best practices for security and performance for all web servers.
5. Managing, editing and recommending various server management policies and internally auditing compliance with said server policies and procedures.
6. Facilitates secure system integrations between third party vendors, MSU, and Extension Service.
7. Research, design, plan, implement, and support single sign-on (SSO) services for clientele and connect with 3rd party software and vendors.
8. Identify, select, procure, and support commercial, cloud-based IT services including, but not limited to, learning management system, survey system, LMS plugins, etc.
9. Manage database servers and liaison between 3rd party DBA support vendor(s).
10. Manage web and other application connections to university payment processor gateway (Nelnet).
11. Assist managing emergency power systems and recommend off-site disaster recovery options including alternate-site servers, storage, and equipment.
12. Monitor server performance data and implement changes to insure all applications receive the resources needed.
13. Manage a responsive development and production environment for web and applications developers.
14. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management of Information Systems or a closely related field.
Experience: Three (3) years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Knowledge and experience running multiple open-source software applications in an enterprise environment.
- Expertise in management of LAMP servers.
- Expertise and experience working with content management systems (DRUPAL, WordPress).
- Expertise in CANVAS LMS, H5P, Qualtrics, Nelnet, and various LMS plugins.
- Experience in management of contractors supporting databases and other critical systems.
- Experience in management of system security and intrusion detection.
- Working knowledge of single-sign on services (SAML2, CAS).
- Knowledge of Microsoft Hyper-V.
- Working knowledge of ports, protocols, VLANS, subnetting, name resolution and CLI tools.
- Strong analytical and technical skills with and attention for detail and accuracy.
- Highly self-motivated and directed, with experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
- More than 5 years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Detailed working experience with Redhat Enterprise and CentOS operating systems.
- Experience with Microsoft server and client Operating Systems.
- Experience managing database servers including: Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL, and Oracle Database.
- Experience with load balancing and high availability techniques.
- Programming knowledge of Perl, PHP/Symfony, JavaScript, and Windows Scripting.
- Leadership experience within a team-oriented technical environment.
- Extensive working knowledge of Linux and Microsoft operating systems, LDAP, and Active Directory.
- Knowledge and experience with managing VMWare, Symantec NetBackup software and appliances on and off site with multiple machine clusters.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
- No or very limited physical effort required.
