Position Function:
Responsible for a full range of Access and Information desk functions using an automated circulation system, including the performance of routine administrative procedures, and assisting in troubleshooting patron complaints. The work requires the employee to be familiar with computer-based applications, ability to answer reference questions when librarians are not on duty, quick to learn new computer applications, as well as comprehend and explain library policies and procedures to patrons. Must be able to carry out emergency procedures and be able to stay calm and focused during a crisis. Must be able to answer the telephone using proper etiquette and provide accurate information for patrons and refer or transfer calls to other departments. This individual is the only staff member in the building on Sundays and after 7pm Monday through Thursday. Provide and promote friendly and courteous customer service to the MSU community. Supervise student assistants while encouraging and refining their skills in customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in positions allocated to this classification. 1. Oversee the operation of the library during the hours of 7:00 pm and 12:00 am. Working with student assistants in other departments as well as supervising Access and Information students after 7:00 pm. Serves as the central point of contact during any emergency and has the responsibility for ensuring the safety of the patrons and building/collection during these hours.
2. Assist in training and supervising fifteen to twenty student assistants ensuring each student receives the proper training to perform the assigned duties to the best of the student's ability. Provide additional individual training and guidance for staff and students after 7:00 pm as needed for job related activities.
3. Maintain the In-Transit list for books that are incoming and going out to other Mississippi Library Partnership. Preparing the in-transit boxes for the courier at night.
4. Serve as a backup for the missing book list.
5. Serve as secondary contact for Room reservations.
6. Handle any job within the department to help close out the day so no work has to be left unfinished.
7. Perform Library closing procedures which include ensuring the Access and Information area is clean and orderly for the next day, that all patrons have left the premises, accounting for daily transactions by making deposits and making certain the money is placed in the safe and the building is secure.
8. Monitor security and surveillance cameras and report alarms to the Director.
9. Barcode and Catalog journals as needed.
10. Process or clear patron's fines as the situation dictates.
11. Serve on various library committees as needed.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities but may give general instructions to subordinate clerical and/or student employees.
This position reports to the Director for Access, Service Design, and Space Coordination.
Position Hours
Spring and Fall Semester: Sunday - Thursday, 3pm until 12am
Summer Semester: Sunday - Thursday, 1pm until 10pm
Interims: Monday - Friday, 8am until 5pm
24-hour schedule during finals: Sunday - Thursday, 5pm until 2am
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED
2 years of related experience
Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Working knowledge of computers and database management.
2. Previous supervisory experience and previous work in a service-oriented environment preferred.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and the general public is required.
4. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions as well as attention to detail.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
1. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
2. No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
3. No or very limited physical effort required.
