Position Function:
Under supervision, assist with necropsy procedures of small and large animals, sample collection and provide general support to veterinary pathologists in the necropsy area.
Salary Grade: 13

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist the veterinary pathologists with necropsy examinations
Prepare animal carcasses for necropsies, including moving and conducting anatomic dissections per the preferences of the pathologist in duty
Operate hoist for movement of large animals
Utilize power saws, knives, scissors, and other surgical instruments to conduct specific necropsy incisions, and remove organs or tissues as needed
Collect and preserve samples for laboratory testing; oversee sample storage
Assist the pathologist with the sample accessioning
Assist with photographic documentation of lesions or necropsy specimens
Responsible for disposition of remains, including maintaining chain of custody of legal cases and coordinating with crematory services
Perform quality evaluations of one-day-old chickens (chick-checks)
Support the laboratory quality assurance program
Act as a liaison with sample receiving personnel
In the absence of the necropsy technician, will perform cleaning and disinfection of necropsy equipment and area
Responsible for determining needs and ordering necropsy supplies and equipment
Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in biology, animal science, veterinary technology, or a related area
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, veterinary technology, or a related area
Basic knowledge of animal anatomy and medical terminology.
Experience in Forensic Science
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Excellent multitasking skills.
• Skill in the use of computers, and related software applications.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work is normally performed in a typical interior laboratory area. Requires occasional heavy lifting, up to 50 pounds.
