Position Function:
The College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University, invites applications for a 0.75 FTE teaching track assistant professor position, housed in the Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine.
Salary Grade: UC
Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.
Area of Specialization:
Rural Veterinary Practice
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include recruitment, advising, and teaching for the Center for Rural Veterinary Practice (CRVP; 0.25 FTE), anatomy teaching in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) curriculum and Veterinary Medical Technology (VMT) program (0.25 FTE), farm animal clinical services (0.25 FTE), and 0.05 FTE academic service (e.g., committees, taskforces, and student interviews).
The 0.25 FTE teaching allocation to the CRVP focuses on recruitment of middle school, high school, community college, and undergraduate students into veterinary medicine. It also includes advising so that students receive guidance as they navigate through their education. Recruitment activities are coordinated through the Office of Admissions and Student Success and the VMT Program, and travel is required. The individual selected for this position is expected to develop creative activities to connect high school and college students to rural veterinary practice as a career. They will also teach current DVM students and help them develop and further their interest in rural mixed animal practice and business ownership. They will develop and deliver unique DVM student learning activities and participate in student mentoring, and they are expected to pursue professional development in veterinary medical education.
Anatomy teaching (0.20 FTE) primarily consists of instruction in DVM and VMT anatomy laboratories focused on large animal species, but there may be opportunities for didactic anatomy teaching in the future. The individual selected for this position joins an experienced anatomy professor who delivers the anatomy courses in the DVM program with assistance from other instructors.
Clinical service (0.25 FTE) includes in-house and ambulatory service primary care services for beef cattle, dairy cattle, and small ruminants; including shared ambulatory emergency duty (farm animals and horses). It is estimated that faculty spend 50% of their time teaching on clinics, and this component of the position therefore represents 0.125 FTE service/0.125 FTE teaching. A clinic schedule of one week per month or one day per week, plus emergency duty is expected.
Building plans for a new farm animal hospital and outpatient facility are being finalized. This facility will enhance animal flow and allow outpatient and inpatient services to be conducted simultaneously. It also includes a physical location for the CRVP with space for active teaching laboratories and study.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include a DVM or equivalent. A graduate degree beyond the DVM and Board eligibility/certification in an AVMA approved specialty is required. Collegiality and excellent communication skills are required. The ability to do sustained physical activity associated with large animal practice is required, as is a valid drivers license. Attainment of a regular veterinary license in Mississippi is required, as well as maintenance of Category 2 veterinary accreditation. The successful candidate will work directly with other faculty members in the CRVP, food animal and ambulatory services, and anatomy.

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.
